Job description
Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring prison officers for HMP Highpoint. This is a demanding, people-focused role where the aim is to safeguard the public while supporting prisoners to make constructive changes in their lives.
The position offers a starting salary in the range of £35,746 to £40,003 and suits someone with integrity, resilience and strong interpersonal skills. The work is varied and no two days are likely to be the same. With time and experience, there are opportunities to develop your career and move into specialist areas.
Who this role suits
The service values applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds, whether they have worked in education, retail, the armed forces, parenting, or other fields. What matters most is a calm approach, confidence, empathy and the ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
Prison officers are expected to build respectful, constructive relationships with people in custody, including those who may be at a very difficult point in their lives. A strong sense of teamwork is essential, as officers must work together to keep prisoners, colleagues and the wider prison environment safe.
What the work involves
This is a fast-moving environment where you may switch between several responsibilities in a single shift. At different times, you could be maintaining order, offering support, guiding behaviour or helping people learn and progress.
You will work directly with prisoners in a secure setting and contribute to both safety and rehabilitation.
Working pattern
The role requires flexibility to work across different shifts, including weekends.
Training, progression and rewards
Successful candidates will receive strong training and development support, with progression routes and the possibility of specialising in different areas over time.
In addition to a competitive salary, the package includes 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Beyond the benefits, the role offers a strong sense of purpose and the satisfaction of helping people rebuild their lives.
Application note
Candidates who feel they have the right qualities are encouraged to apply.
