Job description
About the Position
This full-time postdoctoral fellowship is based in Sydney, Australia, within the School of Biotechnology & Biomolecular Science at UNSW. The successful candidate will join an Australian Research Council-funded project focused on engineering the ‘super-ribosome’ to explore post-translational modifications (PTMs) of ribosomes across various species and their role in enhancing cellular protein synthesis under stress conditions.
The School houses advanced facilities including a premier Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry Facility and the Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics. The role offers a fixed-term contract of 18 months (up to June 2028) with a salary range of $113,000 to $121,000 plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct independent or collaborative research at a high academic standard.
- Employ molecular biology, proteomic analyses, and protein translation assays to examine ribosomal PTMs.
- Investigate novel PTMs by cloning related enzymes to assess their effects on ribosome function.
- Generate scholarly outputs and disseminate results through publications, conferences, and workshops.
- Support supervision of research students and contribute to research development activities.

Candidate Requirements
- Doctoral degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience in mass spectrometry techniques and proteome analysis focused on protein PTMs.
- Strong molecular biology skills with expertise in yeast (S. cerevisiae), including genome editing via homologous recombination and phenotypic screening.
- Experienced in cloning genes in E. coli, protein expression, purification, and conducting in vitro enzyme assays.
- Proficient bioinformatics skills for protein sequence and omics data analysis.
- Knowledge of assays monitoring ribosomal translation quality.
- Proven ability to conduct high-quality independent academic research with a record of relevant publications and presentations.
- Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills across diverse stakeholder groups.
- Awareness of and commitment to health and safety responsibilities.
