This is a permanent postal delivery driver position based at Cambridge Delivery Office in Cambridge, CB1 7QQ. The role is with Royal Mail and involves delivering letters and parcels as a Postie, representing a trusted service in the local community.

Pay and hours

The pay rate is £13.68 per hour, with monthly pay and the option of paid overtime. The working pattern is 37 hours per week, spread across 5 days out of 7, Monday to Sunday, with shifts from 07:30 to 16:00. The schedule rotates and includes weekends. The rota will set the hours and delivery routes, which can change depending on operational demand. Sunday working is required at Cambridge Delivery Office.

What the job involves

• Preparing letters and parcels at the delivery office before heading out on the route.
• Delivering mail by van and on foot within the local area.
• Keeping a positive relationship with customers during daily deliveries.
• Working outside in all weather conditions.

You will handle more than mail, including items such as exam results, birthday cards, business deliveries, and other important parcels and correspondence. The work can be demanding, but it is described as rewarding.

• Long periods of walking, including routes that can reach up to 12 miles or more than 20,000 steps.
• Daily driving of a Royal Mail van.

Candidate profile

Full training, a uniform, and a red Royal Mail van are provided. You should be dependable, self-driven, organised, resilient, and comfortable working on your own. A strong customer focus is important, along with the ability to stay active and work in a fast-moving environment.

Driving and physical requirements

• A full UK manual driving licence is required, with no more than 6 penalty points, and it must be registered in your current name and address.
• You must be prepared to drive a Royal Mail van every day and pass a driving assessment.
• You need to be physically fit enough for long walks, stairs, hills, and lifting or carrying mailbags of 10 kg or more.
• Comfort with independent outdoor work is essential.

Additional terms

Delivery standards

As a Postie, you are expected to deliver every item on your route securely and in line with Royal Mail business standards. This includes election materials and certain restricted items such as food products or alcohol.
