Role overview
This position supports mailroom and postal operations at Ridgeland Correctional Institution in Jasper County, South Carolina. The role involves handling incoming and outgoing mail, coordinating postal services, and keeping related records accurate and up to date.
What you’ll do
- Accept, organize, and deliver incoming correspondence while preparing outbound mail for dispatch.
- Manage the institution’s postal service activities and related workflow.
- Oversee staff members who perform mail-handling duties.
- Track insured and registered mail, along with associated billing documentation.
- Use knowledge of mail-handling rules, office recordkeeping, and filing systems to keep operations organized.
- Operate postal meters and scales as needed.
- Maintain detailed transaction records and submit reports to the SCDC financial accounting branch.
- Make sure inmate legal mail is processed and distributed in line with applicable policies and procedures.
- Help arrange monthly postage meter replenishment and collect postage reimbursements from inmates when required.
Training and application notes
Selected candidates must complete four weeks of SCDC Basic Training after being hired.

Minimum qualifications
Applicants must meet the State of South Carolina minimum requirement of a high school diploma plus work experience in postal, courier, or delivery operations.
The SCDC minimum requirement is a high school diploma and at least one year of experience in postal, courier, or delivery operations. An associate degree or higher may be used in place of the required work experience.
