Job description
Position Overview
This role involves precise and comprehensive typing and data entry related to initial and follow-up documentation on criminal investigations covering all crimes reported to the Police Department. The specialist will handle data input in department databases, process Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, and retrieve data from the Virginia Crime Information Network (VCIN), National Crime Information Center (NCIC), and other departmental databases.
Qualifications
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED paired with at least three years of experience in data entry and records management, or an equivalent blend of education and experience. It is essential to have familiarity with law enforcement terminology and be highly skilled in using computer workstations. Understanding records management principles, including compliance with laws, rules, and regulations that oversee the retention, release, and disposal of police investigative records and related files, is required. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, as well as strong interpersonal and public relations abilities, are necessary.
Additional Requirements
This position is classified as Critical Safety Sensitive, mandating pre-employment drug screening, an FBI criminal background investigation, and verification of educational credentials. Employees are prohibited from using illegal drugs or medical marijuana and must abstain from alcohol consumption or influence during duty, on work premises, or while operating agency equipment. The role involves access to high-security areas governed by the U.S. Department of Justice Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy, necessitating a more rigorous criminal background check. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents eligible for naturalization.
Work Schedule and Location
The job is part-time, requiring 28 hours per week spread over 4 workdays, located at the Police Department in Chesterfield, Virginia.
