Job description

About NBPA

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) serves as the labor union for active players in the NBA. Founded in 1954, its core purpose is to safeguard and strengthen player rights.

NBPA supports players in several ways, including negotiating collective bargaining agreements, pursuing grievances on their behalf, and advising them on benefits, education, and career options after basketball. THINK450, the organization’s business and licensing arm, develops partnership opportunities and currently works with more than 80 active partners. The NBPA Foundation extends this impact by supporting communities, organizations, and initiatives around the world, with a focus on charitable work, social entrepreneurship, and preserving players’ legacies.

Role Overview

As the Player Operations, Research & Analytics Intern, you will support the team with research, data management, and analysis that helps improve player services across the full career journey. The role is focused on using insights to strengthen career longevity, support planning and decision-making, and help players transition successfully into life after basketball.

You will work across the full player lifecycle, including youth and grassroots stages, early career, mid-career, veteran players, and recently retired players. A major part of the job is managing data and research that supports Player Operations initiatives. This includes tracking career paths, maintaining records in Salesforce, and turning information into practical insights for programs and reporting. Core projects may involve career longevity research, TAMS, free agent and family engagement initiatives, and analytical materials for quarterly Ed Trust Board meetings.

The internship is based in New York City, NY. The assignment runs from June 8 to August 14, and the pay rate is $26 per hour.

Responsibilities

  • Keep comprehensive records of player movement, milestone updates, and off-court business activity across all five player groups.
  • Maintain accurate and well-organized data in Salesforce, and fix inconsistencies when they appear.
  • Study player career activity, education, and professional interests to identify patterns that can guide future programs.
  • Build reports, dashboards, and visual summaries for quarterly Ed Trust Board meetings and internal planning discussions.
  • Support initiatives by analyzing information related to career length, TAMS, player tiers, family engagement, and other strategic priorities.
  • Carry out focused research on player interests and social media presence to improve outreach and engagement efforts.
  • Help the Player Operations team with planning, preparing materials, and other data-related administrative work.
  • Contribute ideas and support efforts that make data collection, tracking, and player engagement more efficient.

Requirements

  • Current undergraduate junior or senior, or a graduate student.
  • Strong background in data analysis, research methods, and database management.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel, and Google Suite, especially Sheets; Salesforce experience is highly desirable.
  • Excellent organization and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work on your own while also contributing effectively in a fast-moving team setting.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain data succinctly.
  • Basic familiarity with the professional sports environment and social media platforms.
  • Demonstrated discretion when handling confidential or sensitive information.

Additional Information

Desired experience includes supporting strategic, research-driven work in a sports or player-facing environment. The role is centered on operational support, analytics, and CRM-based data management for professional basketball player programs.
