Job Overview
This role supports the day-to-day running of the Nursery and Finishing areas on a pig farm. The position focuses on individual care for sows and piglets, adherence to herd health procedures, detailed record maintenance, and upholding strong animal welfare standards to support efficient production.
Reporting Line
The role reports to the Section Coordinator / Animal Care Technician – Lead.
Key Duties
- Carry out the daily work required in the Nursery and Finishing sections.
- Make sure pigs always have access to feed and water.
- Check pigs each day for signs of illness or other health concerns and respond in line with the Animal Care Plan.
- Support the weekly transfer of pigs from nursery areas to finishing areas.
- Help with selecting and loading market-ready pigs and replacement gilts.
- Keep an eye on room conditions such as temperature and air quality.
- Maintain high levels of cleanliness, sanitation, and hygiene in the section.
- Remove deceased pigs and dispose of them correctly.
- Keep section records current, including MetaFarms entries, worksheets, and door charts.
- Provide support to the Farrowing & Lactation section on weaning days.
- Assist with room setup tasks, including tear-down, pressure washing, disinfection, and preparation for use.
- Carry out routine preventative maintenance, inspect facilities and equipment regularly, and complete basic repairs.
- Support other sections when asked by the Production Manager.
- Attend staff meetings and training sessions as scheduled.
- Follow attendance expectations and arrive on time consistently.
- Comply with all Fenor Farms production procedures, health and safety rules, and biosecurity standards.
- Treat animals humanely and work in line with the Animal Health and Welfare Act.
Skills, Experience, and Working Conditions
- Intermediate English skills are needed for reading, writing, and everyday conversation.
- The job requires availability for weekend work on a rotating schedule.
- Comfort using basic technology such as a smartphone or tablet to enter production data.
- Experience in animal care is preferred but not essential.
- Ability to follow farm protocols and animal care procedures accurately.
- Careful attention to detail and dependable record-keeping are important.
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team and take direction well.
- Self-driven, dependable, and committed to animal welfare.
- The work is physically demanding and includes standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing gates up to 1 metre, and lifting, carrying, or moving items weighing up to 20 kg.
- Responsibilities may change over time based on business needs.
- Some travel will be required.
