About the role

This permanent, full-time Permissions Advisor position sits within the Department of Conservation’s Permissions team. The role can be based in Christchurch, with flexibility for another location if the right candidate is identified.

The position focuses on helping manage approval requests tied to activities on public conservation land and to matters involving protected wildlife, marine mammals, and marine reserves. These activities generally require Department approval, and the team’s work helps ensure they are carried out in line with legislation and in a way that safeguards conservation values.

You will guide applications from the earliest pre-application conversations through assessment and analysis, and onward to preparing reports that support final decisions. The role also involves working closely with colleagues in a collaborative, inclusive setting to produce accurate and high-quality outputs.

A major part of the job is building and sustaining working relationships with a wide mix of people, industry groups, and stakeholders while providing clear professional advice to both internal teams and external customers.

Skills and experience

The Department is looking for applicants who bring some of the following strengths:

• Clear and confident communication, both spoken and written, with the ability to earn trust
• Strong analytical thinking and the ability to turn analysis into a polished professional report
• Good workload management skills, including the ability to juggle several priorities and use planning tools effectively
• Knowledge of the legislative processes relevant to the work, or a background in environmental management or planning

Salary and closing date

The salary range for this role is NZD 69,429 to NZD 88,181, depending on skills and experience.
