Job description

Role Overview

This is a permanent caretaker position at Sacred Heart School and Holy Family School in Paris, Ontario. The role is scheduled for 40 hours per week, 12 months per year, at 1.0 FTE. The afternoon shift runs from 3:30 pm to 11:30 pm. The start date is to be determined.

What the Job Involves

  • Keeping the school or assigned area clean, hygienic, and safe.
  • Maintaining outdoor areas, including lawn cutting and snow removal.
  • Supporting the Principal during site emergencies such as heating, electrical, plumbing, or repair issues.
  • Identifying and reporting hazards or suspicious situations on or near school property.
  • Helping community or external groups using the school by opening and securing doors and flagging any concerns such as damage, smoking, or fire-code issues.
  • Carrying out minor maintenance and repair work on buildings, equipment, and furnishings, including plumbing, electrical touch-ups, painting, furniture repairs, and boarding up broken windows.
  • Servicing equipment and systems by replacing filters, greasing parts, and performing related upkeep.
  • Operating the school heating system, including start-up and shutdown, filter changes, lubrication, and monitoring; weekend and holiday attendance may be required to confirm proper operation.
  • Managing the security system by checking doors and windows, controlling lighting, and activating security at the end of the shift.
  • Attending after-hours events, including fire or security-related situations, when requested.
  • Keeping inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies, including preparing requisitions and handling receiving and storage.
  • Maintaining accurate logs and records such as Ministry documentation, online work requests, incident reports, fire regulation logs, security system reports, weekly fire alarm checks, and water flushing/salting/sanding records.
  • Following WHMIS requirements and ensuring chemicals are labelled, stored, and used safely in line with Material Safety Data Sheets, including using computer systems to reference MSDS information.
  • Working according to safe work procedures and wearing/maintaining the proper protective equipment.
  • Assisting with fire drills, safety audits, and workplace inspections.
  • Handling any other duties assigned by the Supervisor of Maintenance, the Principal, or a designate.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Practical knowledge of cleaning methods and procedures, typically gained through at least one year of training and experience in commercial or institutional cleaning.
  • Completion of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, preferably with technical subjects.
  • Ability to read and write clearly, including preparing supply requests and incident reports, understanding WHMIS and MSDS documents, and using basic arithmetic such as proportions.
  • Working knowledge of basic electrical systems, plumbing, heating systems, yard maintenance, cleaning methods, fire extinguishers and alarms, plus the ability to operate security systems and programmable time controls.
  • Strong awareness of workplace safety requirements, including WHMIS, personal protective equipment, lifting practices, materials handling, and safe work at heights using ladders and scaffolding.
  • Experience using equipment and machinery safely, such as hand and power tools, floor machines, lawn care equipment, ladders, scaffolding, scissor lifts, and man lifts.
  • Basic computer skills, including data entry, internet use, email, and common software programs.
  • Good interpersonal ability to work effectively with supervisors, plant staff, teachers, students, and contractors.
  • Capacity to work independently with limited supervision or collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Physical ability, subject to accommodation obligations, to complete tasks such as climbing ladders and scaffolding and moving moderate to heavy items including janitorial equipment, furniture, supplies, water pails, and garbage bags.
