About the Role
We are seeking a seasoned HR professional ready to operate independently to join a prestigious charitable organization with a strong cultural mission that has thrived for over five decades. The Photographers' Gallery, renowned as the UK's premier public gallery dedicated to photography, is recruiting a People & Culture Manager to pioneer its internal HR function.
This role is based in London (Oxford Circus) with a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week, including 1 day onsite. Offered as an 18-month fixed-term contract with a pro-rata salary between 35,000 and 40,000.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and lead the in-house HR operations while reporting directly to the Gallery's Director.
- Develop and implement people strategies to promote a positive, inclusive, and high-performing workplace culture.
- Take full ownership of employee relations, talent acquisition, performance management, organizational development, policy formulation, compliance management, learning & development, and general HR operations.
- Serve as a trusted adviser to both employees and management, balancing strategic planning with hands-on execution.
- Collaborate closely with senior leadership to support cultural transformation and organizational change initiatives.
- Manage complex employee relations cases, oversee recruitment and onboarding processes, and promote an inclusive environment aligned with the Gallery's core values.
- Support broader organizational priorities including Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI), safeguarding, staff engagement, GDPR adherence, and governance activities.
Candidate Requirements
- Proven HR generalist experience with the ability to work autonomously.
- Demonstrated knowledge of UK employment legislation and handling the entire employee lifecycle.
- Experience with organizational restructures, change management programs, or cultural transformation projects.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to nurture trusted relationships, combining empathy and solid judgement.
- A CIPD Level 5 qualification or equivalent professional experience is desirable but not mandatory.
About the Organisation
The Photographers' Gallery attracts over 250,000 visitors each year and is committed to nurturing future creators, amplifying diverse voices, and delivering impactful cultural experiences. Joining this esteemed arts charity offers an exceptional opportunity to create and influence a new HR function within a values-driven environment.
Application Process
- Applicants should submit a current CV along with a cover letter (maximum half a page) detailing suitability for the position and motivation to work at The Photographers' Gallery.
- Applications close at 9:00am on Monday, 10 August.
- Interviews are scheduled for Thursday 13 August and Friday 14 August.
- Candidates from charity, arts, public, or private sectors with comprehensive HR and change management expertise are encouraged to apply.
