Job description

Position Overview

Gettysburg College's Theatre Arts Department seeks a part-time Technical Director and Scene Shop Supervisor to join their team. The role involves a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to support various stages of theater production from rehearsals to technical deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret scenic designs provided by the Faculty Set Designer and Directors, develop construction plans, and coordinate scheduling for the building and installation of scenic elements for mainstage productions.
  • Lead the construction and installation of scenery, set pieces, and stage props using techniques in woodworking and rigging, serving as the chief carpenter in the scene shop.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the scene shop, including maintenance of power tools and equipment, oversight of supplies, and organizing the workspace to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Recruit, instruct, and supervise student assistants in the proper and safe use of power and hand tools as well as rigging methods, while teaching construction processes and enforcing safety protocols.
  • Maintain rehearsal and performance areas, including rigging systems, soft goods, stage flooring, and storage facilities, to ensure safety for performers, crew, and audiences.
  • Regularly conduct hazard and risk assessments of all workshop and theater spaces; maintain updated chemical inventories and safety data sheets; promptly report safety concerns and incidents to relevant department heads and campus safety.
  • Fulfill additional duties as assigned within the department.

Compensation and Employment Details

This part-time position offers a pay rate of $22.00 per hour. It is classified as casual support staff without associated benefits.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must obtain CPR and First Aid certification within three months of hire.
  • A valid driver's license is mandatory for the transport of materials and equipment.
  • Experience in Technical Theatre or Entertainment Technology is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with carpentry, safe ladder operation, and basic rigging techniques is desirable.
  • Additional experience with audio systems, microphones, scenic painting, lighting, and audiovisual technology is advantageous.
