Job description

Position Overview

Chesterfield County is seeking a part-time Child Safety Officer to provide structured safety education and supervision for elementary students in public schools. The role involves teaching a comprehensive safety curriculum, facilitating a safe environment, and assisting with traffic direction around school zones.

Salary and Schedule

The hourly rate is $21.99. The position requires approximately 28 hours per week over 4 days, with shifts varying Monday through Friday.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver 32 age-appropriate lessons from the Success Through Education and Proactive Policing (STEPP) program using lectures, audiovisual aids, props, and handouts.
  • Serve as a positive role model by teaching respect and guiding students towards safe, responsible decision-making.
  • Manage traffic flow daily in school zones to ensure pedestrian and cyclist safety.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.
  • Participate in yearly specialized and ongoing on-the-job training.
  • Engage in an approved Career Development Plan with potential for advancement and salary increases based on performance and qualifications.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in education or a related field, or a high school diploma/GED with relevant training and experience in public speaking, teaching, or program planning.
  • Ability to prepare and execute lesson plans.
  • Strong skills in group management and organization.
  • Experience working with elementary-aged children.
  • Valid and clean driving record as per Virginia DMV standards (no six or more demerit points within the past 24 months or major violations within 36 months).
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug testing, FBI background check, and educational verification.
  • Eligibility for random drug and alcohol testing during employment; prohibition on illegal drugs and medical marijuana; no alcohol consumption on duty or premises.
  • Ability to pass enhanced criminal background screening compliant with the Criminal Justice Information Services Security Policy.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident eligible for naturalization.
