Job description

About the Role

Pōkeno Park Superintendent is a live-in position with the Hynds Foundation at Pōkeno Park in Waikato. The site is a private native park and conservation property, and the role is suited to an experienced, practical property and land manager who enjoys varied outdoor work and taking ownership of day-to-day site care.

The position sits within a long-term Master Plan, with room to contribute ideas, improve systems, and bring hands-on expertise to the ongoing development and upkeep of the park.

Key Duties

Your work will cover a broad mix of land management, maintenance, and stakeholder support. You will spend time on practical park care as well as coordinating people and keeping the property operating smoothly.

  • Carry out native planting, weed control, track upkeep, fence maintenance, and care of wetlands and waterways
  • Operate and look after machinery used for grounds and property work
  • Support small construction and improvement projects across the site
  • Oversee external contractors and suppliers engaged on the property
  • Maintain buildings and other site assets
  • Manage site security and help ensure the property remains safe and well-presented
  • Assist with the installation, care, and visual presentation of art and sculpture installations
  • Welcome and host trustees, stakeholders, and other visitors when required

What We Are Looking For

The ideal person will bring strong practical experience in property, land, horticulture, or ecological restoration work, along with the confidence to work independently and represent the property professionally.

  • Good working knowledge of native plants and New Zealand ecological restoration
  • Previous experience in horticulture, landscaping, or land management
  • Ability to operate and maintain farm or grounds machinery
  • Basic building and construction capability, including fencing, pathways, and retaining structures
  • An appreciation for presentation and care of art and sculpture in a park setting
  • Strong self-management skills and the ability to plan and prioritise work without close supervision
  • Clear, friendly communication skills for dealing with contractors, trustees, and visitors
  • Strong commitment to safe working practices in a rural environment

Live-in Arrangement

This is an on-site accommodation role. The Foundation is specifically seeking someone who will live on the property with their partner, supporting the security and day-to-day presence needed for the site.

The position offers the chance to live in a beautiful property while working on conservation, land care, and property management tasks that make a real difference.

Pre-employment Requirements

All shortlisted candidates must be able to complete a pre-employment medical assessment, an alcohol and drug screen, and a criminal history check. Applicants must also have the legal right to work in New Zealand.

Leave it if you'd like a reply — we won't use it for anything else.
