Job description
Role Overview
The Para-Transit Driver is responsible for safely transporting members of the public, including seniors and passengers with developmental disabilities, in an appropriately sized vehicle. The role requires careful attention to passenger safety, vehicle condition, and professional interaction with riders, care providers, centers, and staff.
Key Duties
- Transport passengers safely between approved pickup and drop-off points.
- Make sure every passenger is properly secured before and during travel.
- Operate the wheelchair lift correctly for boarding and exit.
- Store wheelchair-related equipment safely before moving the vehicle.
- Drive in varied weather and terrain conditions for field trips and other assigned travel.
- Use the two-way radio as needed to communicate during operations.
- Maintain a safe environment on the bus by enforcing conduct rules and handling emergencies appropriately.
- Keep the vehicle clean and in safe working condition.
- Record information from minor accidents when they occur.
- Complete, document, and submit daily vehicle condition reports.
- Read and interpret maps and directions.
- Perform basic arithmetic and complete required reports.
- Attend mandatory training sessions and meetings.
- Travel for business when required.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
- Work evenings, weekends, and holidays when scheduled.
- Carry out any other related duties assigned.
Qualifications
- Must hold a valid Commercial Class A or B license with passenger endorsement (P).
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- At least 6 months of experience is preferred.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Must be able to obtain and keep the required certifications within 30 days of hire.
- Must maintain a valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, and auto insurance that meets state and organization requirements for operating organization vehicles.
- Must pass the required background checks, including a medical examination and Department of Justice fingerprint clearance; TB clearance and child abuse index review may also be required.
- CPR and First Aid certification must be completed within 6 months of hire.
- Must pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and remain subject to ongoing testing during employment.
- No supervisory responsibilities are assigned to this position.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
Physical Requirements
This position involves frequent sitting, talking, hearing, walking, and the use of hands and arms for handling or reaching. Occasional standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling may be needed. The role also requires frequent lifting and moving of up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, along with the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
The job may involve occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level is generally moderate.
Schedule
This is a split-shift role with working hours from 6:30am–9:30am and 1:00pm–4:30pm. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.
