About the Organization

The Centre for Teaching Excellence (CTE) at the University of Waterloo works with instructors and academic teams to strengthen teaching and learning through high-quality, inclusive, and forward-thinking practices. Based at a research-focused university, the centre partners with faculty, staff, and departments to create and deliver evidence-based teaching approaches. It provides consultations, programming, and resources that support student-centered learning and the thoughtful use of technology in the classroom. The team values ongoing improvement, collaborative work, academic integrity, and varied perspectives in education.

Role Overview

This full-time, on-site leadership position in Waterloo, Ontario is responsible for directing the Centre for Teaching Excellence both strategically and operationally. The role shapes the centre’s long-term priorities while also ensuring smooth day-to-day functioning. The person in this position will guide teaching support initiatives, align activities with university goals, and help build an environment that encourages innovation, inclusion, and effective learning design.

Key Duties

Working closely with faculty members, academic leaders, and professional staff, the role identifies teaching and learning needs, helps determine resource allocation, and measures the outcomes of centre programs and services. The position also involves making decisions using data and feedback, supervising and coaching team members, overseeing budgets and projects, and representing the centre on internal and external committees. Building productive relationships across the university and promoting strong teaching practices are central to the role.

Qualifications

  • Proven leadership background in an academic or educational development environment, with experience in strategic planning, team supervision, and program management.
  • Strong understanding of teaching and learning in higher education, including evidence-informed pedagogy, curriculum design, and learning assessment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and administrators from different academic areas.
  • Demonstrated experience handling budgets, managing projects, and using data and stakeholder feedback to improve services and programs.
  • Advanced graduate degree in education, educational development, higher education, or a closely related discipline; a PhD or other doctoral qualification is considered an advantage.
  • Experience supporting inclusive, accessible, and equitable learning settings, with familiarity in universal design for learning and similar frameworks.
  • Comfort working in an on-site campus environment while balancing strategic leadership with practical operational responsibilities.
