Job description

About Transpower

Transpower is helping prepare New Zealand’s electricity system for a much higher future demand, with usage forecast to grow by about 68% by 2050. The organisation is investing in its people, processes, and infrastructure to meet the needs of the years ahead.

About the Team

The Operations division is central to running the grid. It works alongside Control Centres to support live operational decisions, coordinate outages, assist electricity market activity, and keep the network visible and controllable.

Within this division, the Outage Planning team coordinates across the business, service providers, and connected customers to schedule outages that allow essential maintenance work and project delivery to proceed safely and effectively.

The Opportunity

Transpower is seeking an Outage Planner based in Auckland or Palmerston North. This role involves working with multiple teams and stakeholders to coordinate grid outages, contribute to longer-term grid planning, and support performance improvement initiatives.

The position is highly collaborative and relies on strong relationship-building, clear communication, and the ability to work through complex situations while keeping plans moving.

About You

You are someone who likes bringing order to coordination and planning work, and you perform well when collaborating to achieve shared goals. You are a practical problem-solver who can handle complexity, connect people, and maintain momentum.

You build trusted working relationships, deal with challenges constructively, and contribute to a team culture of ongoing improvement. In return, you will gain deeper expertise, exposure to a fast-paced and important part of the business, and the chance to help keep New Zealand’s electricity supply reliable.

What You’ll Need

  • Previous experience in the electricity industry or a similar sector
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working with a wide range of stakeholders and supporting joint planning
  • Good analytical thinking and problem-solving ability to assess complex issues and help resolve outage planning challenges
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills to balance priorities and meet deadlines
  • Experience using data and systems, including Microsoft Office
  • A proactive mindset toward learning and continuous improvement
  • Ability to support decisions and solve problems in situations where timing and impact matter
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in power systems, engineering, work planning, or data analysis, or equivalent practical experience

Nice to Have

  • Understanding of power systems, the Electricity Industry Participation Code, high-voltage plant and equipment, or generation plant
  • Familiarity with transmission assets and outage management methods
  • Experience using Power BI and Excel for analysis and reporting
  • Background in technical analysis, work planning, or scheduling in the electricity sector

Work Environment and Benefits

Transpower values diversity and brings together people with a wide range of backgrounds, nationalities, and experience. The workplace is collaborative and supports learning, delivery, and a strong team culture.

The role requires office or on-site work for at least three days each week. This arrangement is designed to support relationships, learning, delivery outcomes, and culture, while still offering flexibility through adaptable start and finish times.

Employees also have access to a range of health and wellness benefits.

Application Notes

Applicants should review the position description and submit an application with a cover letter explaining their interest. The role closes on Sunday 14 June. As part of the selection process, candidates may be asked to complete a one-way online interview.
