Job description
Overview
Transpower operates New Zealand’s National Grid, moving electricity from generation to homes, businesses, and communities nationwide. As the organisation expands its digital engineering capability through BIM and digital twin methods, this position will help support the shift from 2D engineering design and operations to 3D-based workflows.
About the team
The Enterprise Information Management team is responsible for governing and maintaining Transpower’s engineering information. That includes drawings, models, controlled documents, photographs, multimedia, and technical records used by both internal teams and external partners.
The opportunity
You will work with a large and complex engineering information environment alongside the drawing and model unit. The scope includes around 800,000 CAD files, hundreds of 3D engineering models, millions of photos, and about 400 PLS-CADD models that support more than 25,000 towers and 11,000 km of transmission circuits across New Zealand.
This role helps ensure engineering information remains accurate, easy to access, protected, and suitable for its intended use. It also supports ongoing improvements to core engineering information systems and helps the business use these datasets effectively.
Key responsibilities
- Coordinate access to drawing and model data for internal and external users while maintaining the correct security and access settings for Transpower records.
- Encourage strong information management practices by offering practical guidance, coaching, and support that builds capability across the business.
- Help develop standards, workflows, and supporting documentation for drawings and models.
- Track drawing and model deliverables to make sure they are complete, high quality, and delivered on time for both operational and project work.
- Share ideas that improve tools, processes, and future digital engineering capability.
About you
You should bring experience handling engineering information in technical, infrastructure, or project-based environments, plus strong attention to detail, a practical approach to solving problems, and the ability to think in systems.
Your CV and cover letter should show experience in engineering information, drawings, models, or related systems; support for information management or document control in engineering or infrastructure settings; strong relationship-building skills with both technical and non-technical people; and confidence in sharing knowledge, supporting users, and developing capability.
Desirable experience
It would be an advantage if you also have knowledge of ISO 19650 and structured information management workflows, experience with Bentley ProjectWise, PLS-CADD, and Autodesk tools such as AutoCAD or Revit, exposure to construction or engineering project environments using formal information management systems, experience with electrical engineering drawings or asset-based infrastructure data, or a tertiary qualification in information management, engineering technology, CAD/BIM, or a related field.
Why this role stands out
This position offers the chance to work with information that supports one of New Zealand’s most important infrastructure networks and directly contributes to how the National Grid is designed, maintained, and developed.
You will also gain exposure to large-scale engineering datasets, developing digital engineering practices, and emerging digital twin capability, while building experience in a specialist field that is becoming increasingly important.
Working style and culture
Transpower’s workforce includes people from more than 28 nationalities, bringing a broad mix of perspectives, experience, and knowledge that is actively valued.
The organisation works from the office or on site for at least three days each week. This supports collaboration, learning, delivery, and culture, while still allowing flexibility through adaptable daily start and finish times for work and personal commitments.
Employee wellbeing is supported through a range of health and wellness benefits.
Application notes
Applicants are asked to review the position description and submit an application with a cover letter explaining their interest. The role closes on Sunday 28 June, and applications will be reviewed as they arrive. Shortlisted candidates may be contacted before the closing date.
Additional information
This opportunity involves working in a nationally significant infrastructure environment where technical knowledge, information management, and continuous improvement all play an important part in the role.
Staff benefits are available through Transpower’s employee wellbeing offering.
