Job description

Role Overview

Join His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service as an Operational Support Grade at HMP Isle of Wight. This role is integral to the smooth and secure daily functioning of a busy correctional facility. Your responsibilities will span a variety of tasks including conducting security and gate searches, managing deliveries, supervising visitors, monitoring communications via CCTV and phone lines, and escorting vehicles across prison grounds. The role blends administrative duties with physically active tasks such as lifting, carrying, and walking.

Key Responsibilities

You will contribute to maintaining safety and order within the prison environment by executing diverse duties such as security checks, visitor management, and operational support logistics, ensuring a secure and efficient facility.

Requirements

Applicants must possess a full, valid UK Driving Licence as driving is a critical aspect of this position. While no formal educational qualifications are necessary, excellent communication skills, good judgement, the ability to remain composed under pressure, and a strong team-oriented attitude are essential.

Working Conditions

The position requires flexibility to cover varied shifts, including weekends and nights, under a shift pattern designed to maintain continuous operation of the prison.

Career Development

This role offers substantial exposure to prison operations and opens pathways to advance into other roles within the prison system, including the potential to move into Prison Officer roles through designated conversion schemes.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary: £29,432 per annum
  • Annual leave entitlement starts at 25 days, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service (prorated)
