Job description
Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring an Operational Support Grade for HMP Guys Marsh. This is an active, varied position that helps ensure the smooth and safe running of a busy prison environment.
You will contribute to everyday operations across a range of duties, including gate security and searches, handling incoming deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone calls and CCTV. The work combines desk-based tasks with hands-on activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the site.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. The ideal candidate communicates well, stays composed under pressure, uses sound judgement, and works effectively as part of a team. This fast-moving role can be a strong starting point for a long-term career.
Working pattern
Shift work is required, and the rota includes weekends and night shifts.
Career impact
This role gives you the chance to support public safety and contribute to important work happening inside prisons. While contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, there may be occasional interaction depending on the establishment. The position also builds valuable operational knowledge and can open pathways into other prison roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Training and development
Successful candidates will receive training as well as opportunities to progress and develop within the service.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this position is £29,432. In addition to base pay, the role includes annual leave of 25 days on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata. You will also receive 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, and the Civil Service pension scheme. Further benefits include season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
