Job description
Role overview
HMP Guys Marsh is hiring an Operational Support Grade to help keep the prison operating safely and efficiently on a day-to-day basis. This is an active, varied position within a supportive team, combining front-line security duties with operational and administrative tasks.
What you will do
Your work may include gate security and searches, handling deliveries, overseeing visitors, observing phone activity and CCTV, and assisting with escorting vehicles across the prison site. The role includes both desk-based responsibilities and physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and walking around the grounds.
About you
No formal qualifications are needed. This opportunity may suit someone who communicates well, stays composed under pressure, uses common sense and sound judgement, and works well as part of a team. The position is fast-paced and requires flexibility.
Working pattern and environment
You will work a range of shifts, including nights and weekends, to support continuous prison operations. Contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, although occasional interaction may occur depending on the establishment.
Career development
This role can build valuable knowledge of prison operations and may open the door to other roles within the prison service, including the option to apply for the Operational Support Grade to Prison Officer conversion route.
Training and progression
HMPPS provides training along with development and progression opportunities to help you grow in the role.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this role is £29,432. In addition to base pay, you will receive annual leave starting at 25 days on appointment and rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata. You will also get 9 bank, public and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, a Civil Service pension, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
