Job description

About the Role

This position is part of a global professional services environment focused on energy, chemicals, and resources. It supports the shift toward more sustainable energy while continuing to help deliver the energy, chemicals, and resource solutions needed today.

The Operational Readiness Engineer is responsible for helping a facility and its supporting infrastructure, systems, and processes reach a state where they are ready for safe, efficient, and sustainable operations from the first day of service. The role works closely with engineering, supply chain, construction, commissioning, and operations and maintenance teams to carry out the readiness program.

In practice, this means making sure readiness plans, procedures, training, and documentation are properly implemented, checked, and handed over to operations. The role combines technical input, coordination, and direct support to connect project delivery with real operational needs.

This position also helps embed asset readiness and maintainability considerations throughout the project lifecycle, from detailed design through commissioning and start-up, so that systems, people, and processes are prepared for dependable operations after handover.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out and maintain the Operational Readiness Plan under the guidance of the Operational Readiness Manager, while monitoring progress against readiness milestones and supporting readiness reviews.
  • Help build and validate asset structures, criticality assessments, and metadata requirements, and check asset information in the Asset Information Model and CMMS so it aligns with ISO 55001 expectations.
  • Work with maintenance and reliability teams to confirm that maintainability requirements are built into system designs, and help prepare and load preventive and predictive maintenance tasks into the CMMS.
  • Support the identification, listing, and control of long-lead items, initial spare parts, and consumables, while coordinating with supply chain and warehouse teams on storage, tagging, and data capture.
  • Assist with writing, reviewing, and verifying SOPs, EOPs, and related work aids, and take part in procedure walkdowns and validation activities.
  • Help roll out operations and maintenance training programs, keeping learning materials current and aligned with the actual plant setup, and join field competency checks and readiness exercises.
  • Perform technical checks on asset data, engineering deliverables, and digital models before handover, ensuring P&IDs, data books, and 3D models are accurate, complete, and connected to operational systems.
  • Take part in performance testing, reliability runs, and early operations support, capture results, identify issues, and help drive corrective actions needed to meet readiness goals.
  • Contribute to readiness reviews, risk assessments, and compliance checks, and make sure findings are recorded, tracked, and closed before system handover.

Role Scope and Working Style

The role is expected to turn readiness requirements into practical outputs and verified systems so that the transition from project execution to steady-state operations is smooth and well controlled.

The engineer is expected to use sound engineering judgment to support decisions affecting operability, maintainability, and whole-life cost. The position requires a good understanding of how project delivery connects with operations, how asset data is structured, and how maintenance systems are integrated.

Work is carried out under general direction from the Operational Readiness Manager or a senior readiness lead. Assignments follow project milestones, readiness plans, and deliverable timelines. While guidance is provided for complex matters and stakeholder coordination, the role is expected to operate independently within assigned technical areas.

The position may also support or guide junior engineers, technicians, or contractors on tasks such as procedure development, data checking, or asset tagging. It does not usually include formal supervisory authority, but it may involve coordinating small task groups or focused work packages.

The role serves as a technical link between project engineering, commissioning, and operations teams. It includes preparing and maintaining readiness documentation, progress updates, and verification records, as well as attending meetings and presentations to share readiness status, technical findings, and corrective actions.

Systems, Tools, and Technical Knowledge

The role requires confidence in operational readiness and asset management systems, including CMMS, AIM, APM, and document control tools. It also involves using readiness trackers, project databases, and engineering software to keep data accurate and progress visible.

Familiarity with ISO 55001 asset management principles and integrated project delivery tools used in readiness and commissioning workflows is expected. The role also supports ongoing improvement of readiness templates, checklists, and data standards.

Qualifications

  • An engineering degree or an equivalent level of practical experience is required.
  • Several years of experience in commissioning on industrial or EPCM projects is expected.

Equal Opportunity and Workplace Culture

The organization states that it is committed to a diverse, inclusive, and respectful workplace where people feel they belong and are heard. Equal employment opportunities are provided to qualified applicants and employees regardless of age, race, creed, color, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information, marital status, citizenship status, or any other legally protected basis.

The workplace culture is described as values-led, with a focus on belonging, collaboration, and innovation. The company also notes its commitment to reskilling employees, using transferable skills, and supporting the transition of the workforce toward low-carbon energy infrastructure and technology.

Applicants are encouraged to broaden their experience, explore varied opportunities, and contribute to sustainable change.
