Job description

About the Role

Animal Referral Hospital Brisbane is seeking a committed Veterinary Nurse to join its specialist oncology team in a permanent full-time position. The role is ideal for someone who enjoys being fully hands-on in patient care, wants to grow beyond general practice, and is looking to build deeper clinical knowledge and technical capability.

About the Hospital

ARH Brisbane is part of an established network of specialist and emergency veterinary hospitals. The Brisbane facility has been purpose-built with modern equipment and offers a broad range of services, including small animal surgery, internal medicine, neurology, surgical and medical oncology, advanced imaging, and 24/7 emergency and critical care. The hospital is built around high clinical standards and genuine compassion for patients and their families.

Work-life balance is a strong focus here. Full-time specialty nurses receive an RDO every fortnight and generally do not work weekends. Hospital attendants manage cleaning duties, and reception staff handle front-of-house tasks, allowing nurses to stay focused on patient care.

What the Team Environment Is Like

The nursing team is known for strong communication, the ability to juggle multiple priorities, and solid time management. The environment is fast paced, collaborative, and supportive, with a sense of humour and camaraderie. Many of the nurses have moved across from general practice into specialty care and enjoy the variety and challenge that comes with it.

Key Duties

  • Provide high-quality nursing care to oncology patients in a specialist hospital setting.
  • Work closely with oncology specialists and clinicians to support treatment and patient management.
  • Carry out nursing tasks at a specialist standard, including patient monitoring and clinical support.
  • Contribute effectively in a busy, fast-moving team environment.
  • Maintain a strong focus on patient welfare, even during demanding shifts.

Requirements

  • Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, and/or a Bachelor of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology, or an equivalent qualification.
  • At least 4 years of nursing experience in a busy general practice, or experience in referral/specialist hospital or emergency nursing.
  • Ability to work efficiently, manage multiple tasks, and function both independently and as part of a team.
  • Consistent commitment to delivering high standards of patient care in a busy environment.
  • Clear and effective communication skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Additional qualifications such as a Diploma of Veterinary Nursing or equivalent further training.
  • Practical knowledge of anaesthetic monitoring, oncology nursing, and patient care.
  • Background in an emergency or specialist hospital setting.
  • Familiarity with RX Works, Smartflow, and Idexx blood machines.

Benefits

  • Supportive, friendly oncology team with guidance from specialists, clinicians, and senior nurses.
  • On-the-job training plus support for continuing education and professional development.
  • Opportunity to work at the highest level of nursing practice.
  • Above-award remuneration.
  • Annual continuing education allowance and access to employee perks.
  • Discounts on pet products from Petbarn, Royal Canin, and Hill’s.
  • Employer support for employee wellbeing, including access to an EAP program.
