Job description

Role overview

The Naval Service is Ireland’s main maritime defence body, responsible for carrying out the State’s sea-based defence duties when required. The Irish Defence Forces is looking for qualified chefs to join the Naval Service as direct-entry personnel. In this position, you will be part of the ship’s logistics team, helping to deliver meals that keep crews healthy, motivated and ready to work both at sea and on shore.

Key duties

  • Plan, prepare and serve meals for the ship’s company while maintaining nutritional balance and menu variety.
  • Work as part of a coordinated kitchen team and uphold strong standards of cleanliness, food safety and operational efficiency in ship and shore kitchens.
  • Contribute to menu planning, stock management and provisioning for deployments of different lengths.
  • Help coach, supervise and support junior and trainee chefs.
  • Take part in broader ship duties, including emergency response training such as firefighting and damage control.

Eligibility and selection requirements

  • Applicants must hold FETAC Level 6 in Culinary Arts, QQI Level 6 in Culinary Arts, NTCB Level 6 in Culinary Arts, or an equivalent national qualification.
  • Candidates must be at least 18 years old and under 39 years old; proof of age will be required if you advance in the selection process.
  • Minimum height required is 5 ft 2 in (157.48 cm), and this will be checked during selection.
  • Tattoos must not be visible above the collar while serving in the Defence Forces; visible tattoos in that area may prevent progression.
  • Applicants must satisfy the Defence Forces work-permit criteria, including at least 5 years’ eligibility to remain in Ireland, and proof of work-permit status may be requested.
  • Candidates must meet the required medical, physical and security vetting standards during recruitment.

Location

The base location is the Naval Base at Haulbowline Island, Cork.
