Role Overview

The Museum Exhibition Production Officer plays a central role in overseeing the planning, coordination, and delivery of museum exhibitions. Acting as a critical liaison between curators, designers, contractors, and technical teams, this position ensures exhibitions are completed on schedule, within allocated budgets, and meet high standards for quality and safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all stages of exhibition production for both temporary and permanent displays, from initial concept through deinstallation.
  • Develop and control budgets for exhibition production, monitor expenses, and implement cost-effective strategies.
  • Create comprehensive production and installation schedules, track progress, and modify plans as deadlines approach.
  • Communicate and collaborate with curators, exhibition designers, conservators, registrars, and other museum personnel to understand exhibition requirements and execute production plans.
  • Identify, select, and supervise external contractors, vendors, and fabricators to ensure compliance with museum standards and contract terms.
  • Oversee the fabrication, transport, and installation of exhibition elements such as cases, graphics, lighting, and multimedia components.
  • Ensure all production operations adhere to relevant health, safety, and security policies and procedures.
  • Keep detailed documentation of production workflows, contracts, and installation blueprints for reporting and future use.
  • Address and resolve challenges that arise during production, responding promptly and flexibly to last-minute changes.

Qualifications and Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Art, Design, Project Management, or a comparable field; equivalent experience considered.
  • Demonstrated background in exhibition production, project management, or similar roles within museums, galleries, or cultural institutions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Capability to interpret technical drawings, floor plans, and design documentation.
  • Proficiency with project management tools and Microsoft Office applications; knowledge of design software is preferred.
  • Understanding of museum standards, conservation techniques, and recommended practices for exhibition production.
  • Willingness to work flexible schedules, including occasional evenings and weekends during installation phases.
  • Dedication to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout exhibition production processes.
