About the Role
This position involves advancing next-generation quantum-based high-transmission x-ray spectrometers aimed at examining practical material systems. Traditional grating and crystal spectrometers typically provide either elevated x-ray sensitivity or enhanced energy resolution. In contrast, cutting-edge quantum detectors such as magnetic microcalorimeter detectors (MMCs) can deliver both high sensitivity and resolution across a wide x-ray energy spectrum.
Within the interdisciplinary QS4Physics research project, you will contribute to creating a flexible platform that allows the integration of novel quantum sensors into advanced beamlines like X-SPEC at the KIT Light Source. Utilizing a fusion of sophisticated x-ray spectrometers and innovative quantum sensors, your investigations will focus on applied materials, including areas like catalysis and energy conversion, employing both soft and hard x-rays at KIT Light Source beamlines. Interaction with a multidisciplinary team will be key, straddling detector physics and materials science research.
The position offers the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree concurrent with employment.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop detector platforms to incorporate MMCs into existing high-tech synchrotron beamlines (e.g., X-SPEC)
- Fabricate and analyze infrared blocking filters optimized for high transmission in both soft and hard x-ray energy ranges
- Disseminate research findings at international scientific conferences and through peer-reviewed publications
- Execute electron and x-ray spectroscopy experiments on applied material systems related to catalysis using various beamlines at the KIT Light Source
Candidate Profile
- Possess a master’s degree in physics, chemistry, material science, or a related discipline
- Experience working with ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems
- Preferably knowledgeable in soft and hard x-ray as well as electron spectroscopy techniques
- Demonstrate enthusiasm for interdisciplinary teamwork focused on detector technology and applied materials
- Effective communication skills in English, both written and spoken
