Job description

About Maryland Public Television

Maryland Public Television (MPT) is the state’s only statewide broadcaster, reaching viewers across Maryland, the District of Columbia, and portions of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. Based in Owings Mills, MPT operates as part of PBS and produces both local and nationally distributed television and digital programming.

Role Overview

The Broadcast Designer/Animator contributes to MPT’s production and marketing efforts by developing polished visual assets for broadcast and interactive use. The role partners closely with the Managing Director and the Art Designer in Creative Services to translate editorial and design direction into effective creative work that supports the organization’s communications goals.

Key Duties

  • Create broadcast-ready graphics that align with MPT and PBS technical standards, visual style, and brand expectations.
  • Research reference material, build logos, develop motion type, construct backgrounds and visual environments, and design program opens, style packages, daypart elements, stunt promotions, and similar assets.
  • Produce graphics for broadcast, web-based applications, and social media, including campaign branding, key art, typography layouts, motion graphics, and animations.
  • Design print collateral such as logos, signage, packaging, presentations, sales deck materials, brochures, posters, and postcards while staying within MPT brand guidelines.
  • Keep project files organized for future retrieval and maintain hardware and software as needed, including routine updates and recommendations for equipment or software improvements.
  • Stay informed about developments in the arts and visual design field and apply current methods in typography and motion graphics.
  • Track project time accurately, maintain in-kind billing documentation, and submit all required reports and records on schedule for billing and cost accounting purposes.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should have at least five years of experience in broadcast design and animation, with hands-on work in 2-D animation, graphics compositing, print design, and Adobe Creative Suite tools such as After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Experience with 3-D animation software such as Maya, 3DS Max, or Cinema 4D is also expected.

Additional Notes

Professional experience may be exchanged on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of study from an accredited college or university in a related field.

Licensing Requirement

This role includes responsibilities that involve driving a motor vehicle, so the selected employee must hold a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license.

Application and Selection Process

Applicants must include enough detail in their application to demonstrate that they meet the position requirements. Any supporting documents, such as diplomas, transcripts, or certificates, must be submitted and received by the closing date to be considered.

Candidates will be evaluated based on their education, training, and experience as described in the application and matched against the needs of the position. Complete and accurate application information is essential.
