Job description
Position Summary
This role is based out of the Vancouver office; candidates not currently located nearby must be willing to relocate within commuting distance. The Mortgage Underwriter evaluates mortgage applications to ensure they adhere to credit policies, regulatory standards, and lending rules, assessing borrower data, collateral, and supporting documentation to make informed credit decisions and recognize risks requiring escalation. Collaboration with brokers, insurers, business development teams, and other internal groups is crucial.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and adjudicate mortgage loan applications to confirm compliance with legislation and Peoples Bank policies.
- Coordinate information gathering to consistently analyze credit applications, making sound and objective credit decisions.
- Work with mortgage default insurers and appraisal services to validate that collateral satisfies bank requirements.
- Prepare and submit insightful written recommendations regarding credit decisions to senior management.
- Meet designated productivity and service targets consistently.
- Verify application data through third party contact, including employment confirmation and employer/business verifications.
- Address escalated credit challenges, respond to queries from clients and internal teams, communicate decisions clearly, and escalate issues to management when necessary.
- Stay informed on legislation such as OSFI B20 guidelines, corporate policies, and insurer requirements.
- Assist in underwriting-related special projects and other operational duties as needed.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in a related discipline is advantageous.
- A minimum of 2-3 years' experience in lender mortgage underwriting or mortgage lending within financial services.
- Strong knowledge of credit adjudication, underwriting methods, and loan products.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, organization, and time management capabilities.
- Familiarity with the financial services sector, including distribution methods and regulations.
- Ability to manage tight deadlines and maintain composure under pressure.
- Highly detail-oriented with accuracy in work.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Capable of working autonomously and collaboratively within teams.
- Flexible and adaptable to change.
- Proficient with computers and relevant software.
