Job description
About the role
RealNZ is hiring a Team Leader for day cruises in Milford Sound / Piopiotahi, one of New Zealand’s most remarkable and remote destinations. The role offers a chance to live and work in an extraordinary setting with a close team, where each day blends leadership, guest service, and hands-on cruise operations.
This is a permanent full-time position based in Milford Sound. It is suited to someone with strong hospitality experience who enjoys working in a fast-moving environment and taking responsibility for both guests and crew.
Milford Sound’s remote lifestyle is part of the appeal, and the position is especially suitable for couples because of the Milford accommodation and the 10-on, 4-off roster. Applications from couples are welcome, and candidates are encouraged to apply together.
What you’ll do
You will lead the team on day cruises while remaining actively involved in the day-to-day running of the vessel. The work is varied and hands-on, with a mix of leadership, hospitality, and guest engagement.
- Supervise and support the cruise crew during daily operations.
- Train and guide team members to help maintain high service standards.
- Share nature and local knowledge with guests as part of the experience.
- Assist in the galley with food preparation and service support.
- Deliver attentive, friendly customer service throughout the cruise.
- Make practical decisions, solve problems, and keep operations running smoothly.
- Work closely with the wider team in a collaborative, on-the-go environment.
What we’re looking for
The ideal candidate will already have cruise or similar hospitality experience, along with leadership ability and confidence working on the water.
- At least 6 months of experience crewing on cruise boats or in a similar role.
- Previous experience leading or supervising a team.
- Working knowledge of maritime operations.
- Experience in hosting and guiding guests.
- Strong communication and a team-focused approach.
- Comfort handling decisions and resolving issues as they arise.
- A genuine enjoyment of guest interaction and working with other crew members.
Perks and benefits
- Subsidised accommodation in Milford Sound.
- A 10 days on, 4 days off roster that gives you regular time to explore.
- Free or heavily discounted access to RealNZ experiences, including rafting on the Shotover and Kawarau Rivers, cruising Doubtful Sound, visiting the Te Anau Glowworm Caves, and exploring Rakiura.
