Its portfolio spans more than 40 brands, including Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, Hibiki Japanese Whisky, Canadian Club, -196, V Energy, Maximus, and Suntory BOSS Coffee.
The business has also invested in a $400 million modern manufacturing and distribution facility in Swanbank, Ipswich. The site is highly automated, designed to support its beverage range, and aligned with a sustainability-focused, carbon-neutral ambition under its Growing for Good philosophy.
Role overview
This position is for a highly organised Microbiology Specialist to support beverage manufacturing quality and safety. The role is central to maintaining microbiological control, meeting compliance requirements, and strengthening laboratory leadership.
You will help build a strong food safety culture through a GEMBA-driven mindset, working directly with production teams on the floor to spot risks, put controls in place, and contribute to continuous improvement.
Key responsibilities
- Run the microbiology lab on a day-to-day basis, ensuring the work is accurate, efficient, and compliant.
- Carry out and supervise microbiological checks on raw ingredients, products in process, and finished goods.
- Support the site Environmental Monitoring Program, including its design, delivery, and ongoing refinement.
- Collect and assess environmental samples from air, surfaces, and water, then use the findings to identify hazards and trigger preventive actions.
- Keep laboratory equipment and methods calibrated and verified, with a focus on continuous improvement.
- Protect data accuracy, integrity, and timely reporting of test results.
- Take part in GEMBA walks and work with production teams to identify risks and drive corrective measures.
- Investigate out-of-specification findings and environmental issues, using root cause analysis to determine and implement effective fixes.
- Lead improvement efforts that strengthen microbiological control and operational performance.
- Assist with internal and external audits and help ensure compliance with food safety and quality standards.
- Contribute to writing, reviewing, and maintaining SOPs and other laboratory records.
- Offer technical support and training to colleagues.
Candidate profile
The ideal applicant is outcome-focused, positive, and proactive, with a can-do attitude.
- A degree in Microbiology, Food Science, or a closely related field, plus 3 to 5 years of relevant experience.
- Background in beverage, food, or FMCG manufacturing settings.
- Good understanding of environmental monitoring, contamination control, and hygienic zoning.
- Proven experience with laboratory management, calibration, and verification systems.
- Very strong attention to detail, with a focus on accuracy and data integrity.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating well across teams.
- A proactive approach and interest in innovation and continuous improvement.
- Strong problem-solving ability and experience with root cause analysis.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to engage stakeholders effectively.
