Role Overview

The Metallurgist for FAMTL will act as the metallurgical subject-matter expert while overseeing assigned Lab Analysts. The position focuses on failure analysis, materials evaluation, testing oversight, reliability support, and technical guidance across engineering, quality, fabrication, and contracting activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct the work of all Lab Analysts assigned to FAMTL, providing expert support in metallurgical engineering.
  • Examine how reliability predictions and test procedures are developed to judge whether they are effective.
  • Keep up with modern developments in reliability, maintainability, and testing technologies.
  • Assess test data to identify issues tied to component design, material design, material properties, and related factors.
  • Analyze material design, production methods, and service use to identify failure causes and suggest design, process, and usage-limit changes.
  • Support prototyping and fabrication workshop teams with issues related to chemical makeup, forging, and heat treatment.
  • Carry out mechanical testing and evaluate metallurgical factors linked to malfunctions in vehicles and weapons systems.
  • Guide design, modelling, and simulation teams when design modifications are needed to improve quality and reliability.
  • Review weapon system specifications and recommend reliability, maintainability, and test requirements for procurement contracts.
  • Assist contracting personnel by interpreting specifications and drawings tied to material requirements and contractor technical capability.
  • Advise quality assurance teams on crack severity, inclusions, porosity, and other defects, including whether acceptance limits are met.
  • Define and apply acceptance standards to stop substandard materials from entering service where they could threaten mission success or human safety.
  • Track projects for non-destructive testing method development and ensure new scientific and technical advances are incorporated into QA systems and inspection/testing equipment.
  • Review technical data packages and provide comments on whether requirements are complete and suitable.
  • Determine the type and quantity of testing needed for first article, acceptance, comparison, and special testing.
  • Investigate failure records and field complaints, analyze quality issues, and prepare corrective action recommendations.
  • Estimate and report reliability and maintainability using data from stockpile sampling, surveillance inspections, critical component reviews, malfunction investigations, and production/acceptance testing.
  • Participate in special committees and technical working groups as needed.
  • Ensure all issued tools, equipment, and high-value property remain serviceable, inventoried, and protected.
  • Plan and monitor training for all assigned Lab Analysts on relevant procedures and processes.
  • Protect the confidentiality and security of company information at all times.
  • Assist other Engineering Department members in meeting their responsibilities.
  • Carry out additional duties assigned by the Senior Manager, Engineering, and the Director, Engineering.

Education and Experience

A bachelor’s degree in science, or an associate’s degree in chemistry, physics, metallurgy, or materials engineering, with understanding of metal, rubber, or resin process technologies is required. A master’s degree is preferred. Candidates should ideally have five to six years of experience in supervising or managing teams. Prior military or automotive industry exposure is considered an advantage.

Technical and Professional Requirements

Strong knowledge of material processes is essential, along with practical experience using failure analysis tools such as SEM, XRF, and XRD, specimen preparation methods, and physical materials testing equipment. The role also requires the ability to interpret technical data, drawings, and engineering documents, make sound independent decisions, and troubleshoot effectively. Proficiency with Microsoft Office is preferred. Strong spoken and written English communication skills are required. The candidate must already have, or be able to obtain, a valid UAE driver’s licence.
