Job description
Overview
This role involves supporting Pathology and Laboratory Medicine services at various sites and community-based locations throughout Nova Scotia. Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs) perform critical tasks during the pre- and post-analytical phases of laboratory testing, including specimen collection, processing, data management, reagent preparation, sterilization, and clerical functions. Duties also include specimen loading on analyzers, supply management, troubleshooting, and providing customer service. Positive patient identification and precise specimen handling are fundamental to the position.
Work Environment and Schedule
MLAs may work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, or at off-site locations such as long-term care facilities, communities, or private residences depending on operational needs. The position requires strict adherence to all NS Health and Pathology & Laboratory Medicine policies, particularly those related to safety and infection control. Candidates must demonstrate professionalism, independent judgment, and excellent customer relations while maintaining dress code standards.
Compensation and Employment Terms
Pay ranges from $25.64 to $30.61 per hour. Employment opportunities include permanent positions, temporary assignments, and casual relief roles; availability and hours may vary by location.

Required Qualifications
- Completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent as assessed by the Nova Scotia Regulator of Medical Laboratory Sciences (NSRMLS).
- Successful completion of Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS)/Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professional Regulators (CAMPLR) MLA exams with current CSMLS registration.
- Licensure with the NSRMLS.
Preferred Skills and Attributes
- Proficient verbal and written communication abilities.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
- Excellent detail orientation and manual dexterity for handling sharp tools and specimens.
- Capability to accurately label specimens, file slides, and requisitions.
- Adaptability to procedural updates and changes.
- Basic computer proficiency, with Meditech experience considered an asset.
- Reliable transportation to accommodate travel requirements.
- Multilingual abilities valued, especially French language skills.
