Food Service Worker - Nutrition & Food Services

About the role

This position sits within Nutrition and Food Services at South Shore Regional Hospital in the Western Zone. The Food Service Worker contributes to patient and retail food service by preparing and serving meals and supplies to patients, residents, veterans, staff, families, and other customers. The role also includes cleaning and sanitizing trays, equipment, and work areas, while supporting safe food handling practices and consistent service quality.

Key duties

• Take patient meal requests by phone and enter selections into a computer system when required.
• Visit patient rooms and record meal choices on an electronic tablet when needed.
• Assemble, portion, and serve meals for patients and visitors.
• Prepare nourishments, special feedings, beverages, menu items, and mix-and-serve food items.
• Make salads and sandwiches.
• Distribute selective menus and patient meals.
• Deliver nourishments along with food and non-food supplies.
• Collect used patient trays and return them for cleaning.
• Receive, store, and rotate food and non-food supplies using FIFO practices.
• Review patient diet and meal orders and confirm meal requirements.
• Support inventory tracking and control.
• Create and print menus, reports, tallies, and labels.
• Print Meditech/STAR reports and compare them with CBORD/Vision reports.
• Clean and sanitize dishes, utensils, equipment, and the work area.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and hygienic food service environment.
• Follow hand hygiene, food storage, temperature control, and cross-contamination prevention practices.

Working conditions and physical demands

Work is performed across the site, and task time may vary depending on the area and assigned role. The position involves frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and moving equipment. Typical lifting requirements can reach 35 to 40 lbs.

Pot room requirements

Employees assigned to the pot room may need special footwear. In certain food service areas, the employer reimburses the cost of safety shoes up to the amount set out in the Collective Agreement. Pot room duties can include heavy lifting, repetitive tasks, and working independently.

Hours and employment details

This is a permanent, hourly full-time role at 75 hours bi-weekly, representing 100% employment. It is a CUPE support position.

Compensation and benefits

The wage range is $20.74 to $21.56 per hour. Eligible successful candidates may receive benefits that include health, dental, travel, long-term disability, and life insurance, along with a defined benefit pension plan.
