Job description

About the Company

Philips is a worldwide health technology organization focused on improving health outcomes and building a more sustainable future through innovation. The company is driven by a strong sense of purpose and a commitment to creating solutions that help people when they need it most.

Role Overview

This position sits within the R&D function of Philips SRC (Sleep and Respiratory Care) and offers the chance to work in a fast-moving environment on products that can save lives. The Mechanical Designer will contribute to remediation, relaunch, new product introduction, and sustaining engineering efforts, with direct involvement in the development of ventilators and disposable masks.

Key Responsibilities

The role covers mechanical engineering support across regulatory, design, development, verification, documentation, and production phases. The selected person will help with sustenance work, remediation efforts, and compliance-related tasks, while also supporting product development and manufacturing troubleshooting.

Project and Quality Scope

The work includes MDR and MDD related project support, CAPA child tasks, DHF remediation, root-cause investigations, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions. The role also calls for strong ownership of design documentation, verification support, and production-startup assistance.

Team and Collaboration

You will work closely with project management and manufacturing teams to resolve issues during sample builds and full production. The role also involves mentoring team members, reviewing technical deliverables, and helping identify and reduce development risks.

Additional Information

This is an office-based position, requiring in-person work for at least 3 days each week. Philips also encourages candidates to apply even if they meet most, but not all, of the listed experience requirements.

Role Expectations

  • Drive sustenance work for respiratory products, including CAPA-related child tasks.
  • Assist with ongoing MDD and MDR compliance requirements.
  • Own and execute remediation activities for the product line.
  • Carry out verification work in the lab for relevant elements and components.
  • Support DHF remediation by defining the strategy, planning the effort, identifying gaps, preparing new or revised files, and reviewing or releasing DHFs.
  • Take responsibility for DHFs covering mechanical and mechatronic parts and subsystems such as gas path elements, valves, sensors, manifolds, patient interfaces, solenoid valves, filters, blowers, motors, and enclosures.
  • Review, guide, and approve design documents, requirements, analyses, simulations, calculations, test plans, procedures, records, and reports.
  • Help project team members prepare development plans and manage technical risks.
  • Contribute to the design, development, evaluation, and implementation of new systems and products for ventilator and sustaining engineering work.
  • Apply strong mechanical design, modeling, and tolerance-analysis practices to create robust solutions.
  • Prepare technical documentation for components, assemblies, and inspection needs using CAD tools.
  • Support release of components, assemblies, and finished products to production and assist with production launch activities.
  • Work with manufacturing engineering to troubleshoot and solve production issues.
  • Stay current with technical developments, industry practices, and competitor activity.
  • Partner with PMG and manufacturing teams to resolve issues during sample builds and actual production.
  • Lead or support CAPA closure through containment, corrective action, and preventive action implementation.
  • Lead root-cause analysis for plant or field issues using fishbone diagrams, why-why analysis, lab replication, and containment measures.
  • Contribute to FMEA, RMM, and hardware mechanical engineering work.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a self-driven, organized, and disciplined mechanical engineer with strong customer focus and a solid technical foundation in medical device or related product design.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering.
  • At least 8 years of experience in designing and analyzing medical devices or similar products.
  • Background in sleep CPAP and BiPAP devices or medical gas delivery systems is preferred.
  • Experience leading technical teams in product development.
  • Strong knowledge of pneumatic systems, including pressure and flow sensing.
  • Experience designing and analyzing low- and medium-pressure gas valves.
  • Exposure to low-pressure gas blowers.
  • Working knowledge of computational fluid dynamics.
  • Experience with plastic injection-molded part design.
  • Understanding of ASME Y14.5 dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Proficiency in solid-modeling CAD tools; Pro-E/Creo is an advantage.
  • Good grasp of mechanical engineering fundamentals.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with FDA quality systems, including ISO 13485 and 21 CFR Part 820, is a plus.
  • Experience with SAP, Windchill, MBSE tools, CITOL, and Ansys WB would be beneficial.
