Overview
Tesla is looking for a practical, detail-oriented Mechanical Engineer to join its Energy Manufacturing Engineering group in Fremont, CA. The role focuses on creating and improving scalable manufacturing solutions that help produce Tesla Energy products efficiently and at high quality. This position is best suited to someone who enjoys hands-on problem solving, moves quickly, can manage substantial responsibility, and is motivated by continuous learning and innovation in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop manufacturing equipment, fixtures, and workstations that support prototype builds, early production, and ramp-up to medium and high volumes.
- Create concept layouts with attention to product flow, ergonomics, space usage, and overall manufacturing efficiency.
- Identify, define, and purchase the equipment and tooling needed across manufacturing processes.
- Weigh product requirements, process needs, footprint constraints, cost, and lead times while planning and building equipment.
- Work closely with vendors and equipment integrators to create and deliver custom fixtures and machinery for scaled production.
- Give design-for-manufacturability input to improve process capability, quality, and yield.
- Support the full lifecycle of equipment installation, debugging, validation, duplication, and final tuning until production readiness is reached.
- Perform detailed testing and acceptance checks, including FAT and SAT, for both in-house and externally installed equipment to confirm reliability, robustness, and quality compliance.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience as a Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Automation Engineer with exposure to automation, machine design, robotics, and product development.
- Practical ability with 2D CAD for conceptual line design, preferably AutoCAD.
- Strong 3D design experience for mechanical equipment, tooling, and fixtures using SolidWorks or CATIA.
- Background in taking products and processes from prototype stages into production environments.
- Experience with conveyance systems, transducer-based fastening systems, and robotic automation, preferably Fanuc robots.
- Ability to write technical specifications for automated manufacturing equipment.
- Experience applying design-for-manufacturability and automation principles.
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

Compensation
The expected annual base salary for this position is $91,600 to $164,400, plus cash awards, stock awards, and benefits. Final pay may differ based on factors such as location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Total compensation may also include additional elements depending on the offer.
