Job description
Role overview
This position supports material planning and material coordination on a large project site. The main focus is to put the Material Management Plan into action and act as a link between project, field procurement, and construction teams so material reporting stays accurate and the site receives the materials needed for work package installation.
The role may begin in the Brisbane Project Office for a few months to support the home office materials management scope before moving to the Cloncurry jobsite.
Project background
The job is connected to the Eva Copper Mine Project, a greenfield resource project in Cloncurry, Queensland, on the traditional lands of the Kalkadoon people. The project is intended to become the largest new mine in Queensland. It is owned by Harmony, a global gold and copper mining and development company with operations in South Africa, Australia, and Papua New Guinea. Bechtel is delivering the engineering, procurement, and construction scope for the process plant and non-process infrastructure across multiple disciplines and functions.
Key responsibilities
- Apply the Material Management Plan and work with Engineering and Construction to define, identify, and quantify materials during early project execution in the office.
- Follow established guidelines to improve the efficiency of planning for major material commodities.
- Maintain consistent material identification methods and clear accountability between project functions and commodity work processes to support an efficient purchase and supply flow.
- Spot special approvals or long approval cycles that could delay key engineering deliverables driving the materials process.
- Coordinate with Engineering to identify critical supplier drawings and data needed early for construction or for the timely release of other design deliverables.
- Help Engineering implement project component numbering methods in line with sound materials management and the project automation plan, including tagged items, bulk materials, and spares.
- Check that requisitions clearly show required pay items and include enough detail for shipping, storage, control, and later distribution to Construction.
- Flag out-of-sequence engineering deliverables or approval bottlenecks that may affect the issue of key engineering outputs supporting materials work.
- Work closely with Project Controls, Discipline Engineers, Supply Chain, Automation Support, and/or the Construction Coordinator so construction teams receive the materials they need.
- Track Engineering and Supply Chain deliverable schedules and confirm they remain aligned with the construction schedule.
Education and experience
A bachelor's degree or an international equivalent is required, along with 8 to 10 years of relevant experience. Candidates with 12 to 14 years of relevant work experience may also be considered in place of the degree route.
Knowledge and skills
- Background in managing bulk commodities and recognizing safety issues related to material handling and storage.
- Understanding of the core functions of a field materials management organization.
- Working knowledge of automated materials management systems and how they help control project materials.
- Familiarity with construction materials management practices such as planning, work packaging, just-in-time delivery, issue-on-receipt, and control of delivered goods.
- Awareness of field engineering disciplines, work processes, and the outputs they produce.
- Ability to supervise complex materials management activities.
- Knowledge of business administration procedures, tools, techniques, and ethical practices.
- Strong supervisory and leadership capability.
