Job description

Role overview

DP World is hiring a Marine Pilot to carry out vessel pilotage on a rotating shift arrangement in Saudi Arabia. The role involves providing licensed pilot services in line with standard operating procedures, local maritime rules, and company requirements.

Core duties

  • Perform pilotage, berthing, and unberthing activities according to operational needs, client expectations, and local regulations.
  • Guide the Ship’s Master and bridge crew during inbound and outbound movements until the vessel is safely berthed or clear of hazards.
  • Use harbour tugs and mooring boats safely and effectively during pilotage operations.
  • Prepare and submit all required records and documents in both electronic and physical formats.
  • Inspect vessels, when needed, from a health and safety angle before pilotage begins to confirm they are suitably manned and equipped.
  • Immediately inform the Harbour Master about any deficiencies found on a vessel.
  • Represent the Harbour Master onboard to protect company interests and coordinate between the Ship’s Master and clients.
  • Work with VTS, monitor radio channels, and coordinate the dispatch of pilots, pilot boats, tugs, and mooring craft to prevent delays.
  • Visit berthed vessels during severe weather when necessary and work with port authorities to maintain ship safety alongside.
  • Trigger emergency procedures when required, direct available craft, and report emergencies to the Harbour Master.
  • Advise the Ship’s Master on local port, customs, and health rules, and help enforce POML-DPW regulations with the Harbour Master and Pilot Manager.
  • Confirm that the assigned berth is safe, including adequate depth, safe separation from other vessels, and freedom from obstructions.
  • Take on additional marine operations tasks, including meetings, working groups, and committees, as needed.
  • Maintain ISPO compliance and support the certification process.
  • Assist other departments whenever support is required.
  • Follow HSSEQ requirements at all times and report any abnormalities noticed.
  • Remain available for emergency response 24/7.
  • Carry out any other duties typically assigned to a pilot or senior marine operations team member by the Harbour Master.
  • Maintain files, records, and supporting documents needed for ISPO certification and audits.
  • Keep procedures aligned with ISPO requirements and contribute to continuous improvement of the safety and quality management system.
  • Ensure procedures reflect the commitment of the Competent Harbour Authority and are ready for management and auditor review.
  • Track the validity of pilot qualifications in line with current STCW, national, local, and any special maritime pilot organization requirements under ISPO.
  • Provide proper safety familiarization for new pilots joining the team.
  • Conduct operational risk assessments using the risk matrix.
  • Review and update the generic risk assessment every year.
  • Use audit findings, incident reviews, accident analyses, and hazardous occurrence data to improve staff training.
  • Participate in and lead investigations into incidents and near misses related to pilotage operations, and ensure HSSEQ-compliant reporting and communication of lessons learned to all maritime pilots.

Compliance and quality expectations

The position also carries responsibility for maintaining the International Standard of Pilot Organization (ISPO) requirements, keeping documentation audit-ready, supporting safety and quality management improvements, and ensuring operational practices remain aligned with certification standards.

Working arrangement

This is a full-time, onsite marine operations role based in Saudi Arabia and is carried out on a rotating shift basis. The pilot must also be available for emergency response around the clock.
