The position blends consulting, client partnership, policy-informed communications, and business growth responsibilities. It is designed for someone who can lead complex initiatives, guide teams, and help organizations engage a wide range of audiences with clarity and purpose.

As a practice leader, you will shape the direction of the communications function, support high-visibility engagements, mentor consultants, and contribute to the firm’s growth.

Key accountabilities

  • Direct strategic communications assignments and act as a dependable advisor to clients by offering subject-matter guidance, strategic input, and quality control.
  • Own client relationships, help expand accounts, and support successful delivery across consulting projects.
  • Design and implement communication plans covering campaign strategy, stakeholder outreach, messaging, and public engagement.
  • Advance public health communications using culturally aware messaging, audience research, storytelling, and digital channels.
  • Contribute to branding, creative concepting, content development, and visual identity work for initiatives and campaigns.
  • Bring expertise in advocacy and policy communications, including policy translation, legislative monitoring, advocacy planning, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Prepare clients for advocacy-related activities such as legislative meetings, public testimony, and communications training.
  • Define and execute the long-term vision and roadmap for the communications practice area.
  • Track industry shifts, new approaches, and emerging opportunities that can improve client service and strengthen organizational strategy.
  • Spot business development opportunities, support proposal creation, assist with client acquisition, and contribute to growth efforts.
  • Develop relationships with public health agencies, community groups, coalitions, and professional networks.
  • Coach and manage consultants and associate-level team members while encouraging collaboration and professional development.

Candidate profile

The role calls for a seasoned strategic communications consultant with strong public health awareness and a proven ability to lead demanding client work and guide teams.

  • At least 8 years of relevant professional experience, including 4 or more years in consulting.
  • Between 6 and 12 years of progressive experience in public programming, advocacy, strategic communications, or a closely related field.
  • A master’s degree in Public Health, Public Administration, or a similar discipline is preferred.
  • At least 4 years of people management experience, with a track record of leading teams.
  • 3 or more years of project leadership or project management experience.
  • 5 or more years of client-facing experience, including management of strategic engagements.
  • Demonstrated success in business development work such as opportunity sourcing, proposal writing, and contracting.
  • Strong presentation and communication abilities, including comfort speaking with senior leaders, stakeholders, and clients.
  • Ability to simplify complex ideas, data, and policy topics into clear messages for different audiences.
  • Comfort working through ambiguity, changing priorities, and a balance of strategic planning with detailed execution.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work independently in a remote consulting setting.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to client locations, conferences, and professional events.

Compensation and benefits

  • Annual salary range of $99,840 to $162,240, depending on experience and internal factors.
  • Remote-first arrangement with the option to work from a home office.
  • More than 6 weeks of total leave, covering vacation, sick leave, personal time, and floating holidays.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage with employer contributions.
  • Health FSA and dependent care FSA options.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching.
  • Employer-paid short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • A one-time technology stipend to support remote work setup and needs.
