Job description
Position Overview
The Nicola Valley Institute of Technology is seeking a dedicated Manager of Marketing, Communications & Events for a full-time, one-year term with potential for extension. The position location will be determined based on the suitability of the candidate, either at the Merritt or Burnaby campus, and will start as soon as a suitable candidate is found.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and execution of the institution's marketing plan including promotions, advertising, editorials, and press releases.
- Oversee management of significant campus events such as graduation ceremonies, student orientation, and other institution-wide activities.
- Collaborate closely with Enrolment Services and report to the Associate Vice President, Students, while supervising the Events Planner and Communication Planner.
- Maintain confidentiality on institutional matters and organize meetings with agendas, minutes, and action tracking.
- Build and sustain respectful and effective relationships with administration, faculty, staff, Indigenous leadership groups, and external organizations.
- Offer expert consultation on marketing, communications, and event-related strategies including public awareness campaigns and media engagement.
- Monitor and advance digital and web-based communication tools, ensuring alignment with current industry trends including social media platforms and the NVIT website.
- Support emergency communications during crisis situations.
- Develop and implement annual work plans aligned with NVIT’s strategic objectives, including both short- and long-term marketing initiatives.
- Use data-driven insights to enhance asset creation and campaign geo-targeting.
- Manage marketing resources such as websites and print materials strategically for continuous improvement.
- Coordinate with government, community, and industry stakeholders at regional and provincial levels as needed.
- Prepare budgets, reports, and proposals relevant to marketing and communications activities.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, business administration, or a related field is strongly preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Minimum five years of pertinent experience in marketing and/or communications.
- Comprehensive understanding of Canada’s colonial history and its impact on Indigenous populations.
- Familiarity with Indigenous communities and knowledge systems, practicing with cultural safety and trauma-informed perspectives.
- Advanced proficiency in communication technologies, professional editing, publishing software, Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Experience with integrated systems such as Colleague or Banner, and familiarity with SharePoint and LMS platforms like Moodle.
- Expertise in marketing, media relations, issue management, and digital/social media tools.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex concepts in plain language.
- Demonstrated organizational skills, independent problem solving, and experience handling multiple priorities in fast-paced environments.
- Proven success in developing and implementing marketing, communications, and event plans.
- Additional skills in project management, marketing strategy formulation, program development, and creative innovation.
- Leadership abilities in team management and staff development, along with strong report writing and presentation skills.
- Alignment with NVIT’s core competencies including ethics, integrity, interpersonal skills, and learner-centered approaches.
Additional Information
The position reports to the Associate Vice President, Students, and the successful applicant will need to demonstrate maturity, initiative, and sound judgment regularly. The role includes significant interaction with Indigenous leadership and community connections, requiring a culturally informed and respectful approach.
