About Hato Hone St John
Since 1885, Hato Hone St John has been dedicated to serving New Zealanders. With a workforce of almost 12,000 people across Aotearoa, we play a vital role in enhancing community health and wellbeing—from managing emergency 111 calls to offering health education and monitoring programs. Our work creates meaningful impact every day.
Role Overview
If frontline ambulance roles are not your calling but you still want to contribute as a volunteer, this role provides a fantastic opportunity. The Major Incident Support Team (MIST) members support ambulance crews and communities in diverse ways depending on the scenario. Responsibilities vary widely, from assisting patient lifting and establishing support at music festivals to responding to major emergencies or national disasters. Whether at planned events or sudden crises, your behind-the-scenes efforts help ensure ambulance services operate efficiently and make a positive difference locally.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure all MIST vehicles and equipment are kept operational and ready for deployment.
- Drive and reposition support, command, or specialist vehicles safely.
- Support major incident responses and events by undertaking logistics, welfare, communications, safety roles, or leading teams.
Training
All new members undertake a foundation course covering an introduction to Hato Hone St John, operational risk management, and vehicle driving training. This prepares members to confidently and safely operate vehicles and equipment in emergency situations.
Candidate Requirements
- Hold a current, full, clean New Zealand Class 1 Driver’s Licence.
- Possess a First Aid Certificate Level 2 preferred; training will be provided if you do not have this.
- Attend at least one monthly training session to sustain operational readiness.
- Be prepared to deploy within 30 minutes of activation after indicating availability.
- Work well both independently and as part of a team.
- Display strong communication abilities and acute attention to detail.
- Maintain a reasonable level of physical fitness.
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Consistently demonstrate Hato Hone St John’s core values: Do the right thing, Side by side, Straight up, Make it better, Open minds.
