Role overview
Apleona is hiring an extra Legionella Risk Assessor to operate from its Loughrea, County Galway office. The position is primarily site-based and involves travelling to client locations across Ireland. Standard working hours are Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:00.
The role focuses on carrying out water system inspections, checking documentation and control measures, and producing clear, evidence-led reports that support public health protection and high service standards.
Core duties
- Carry out Legionella risk assessments on hot and cold water systems and related plant equipment in line with current guidance and company procedures.
- Inspect and record assets, plant and pipework routes, noting condition, how the system is used, and any risk of stagnation, aerosol spread or contamination.
- Review existing control plans, monitoring logs, drawings and earlier assessments to judge how effective they are.
- Spot risk factors such as poor temperature control, dead legs, rarely used outlets, deteriorated tank condition, scale build-up and corrosion.
- Take measurements and readings where needed and support sampling activities.
- Prepare practical, ordered recommendations for remedial actions, stronger controls and ongoing monitoring.
- Write accurate professional reports with asset details, photographs and action plans.
- Discuss findings with clients on site and help them understand their obligations and compliance position.
- Work with internal teams to help make sure recommendations are carried out and followed through.
- Complete risk assessments in line with legislation, guidance, client expectations and internal processes.
- Record site data, assets, readings and observations correctly and upload them into the agreed templates or systems.
- Maintain visit, assessment and outcome records for audits and client review purposes.
- Follow document control rules so reports and schematics are issued and versioned correctly.
- Undertake required HSE training such as manual handling, working at height, confined spaces and COSHH.
- Perform dynamic risk assessments on site and stop work if conditions are unsafe.
- Use vehicles, tools and equipment safely and keep them in good working order.
- Follow environmental best practice, including safe handling and disposal of chemicals and samples.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with key site contacts.
- Explain findings and recommendations in plain, non-technical language when needed.
- Escalate serious non-compliance issues or safety concerns through the proper channels.
Requirements
- Recognised training in Legionella Risk Assessment and Water Hygiene Control in Water Systems is required.
- Experience in water treatment, water hygiene, building services or a similar field is expected.
- Previous work carrying out or assisting with Legionella risk assessments or comparable compliance-based site inspections is needed.
- A full driving licence and experience using it for work travel are required.
- Additional training in Legionella control, water regulations or other recognised industry courses would be an advantage.
- Health and safety training such as IOSH Working Safely, IOSH Managing Safely, Confined Space, Working at Height, Manual Handling or COSHH Awareness is desirable.
- Experience across different types of sites, including healthcare, commercial, industrial, education and public sector environments, is beneficial.
- Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings and pipework schematics is required.
- Familiarity with digital reporting tools, including Collabit, is useful.

The role is based in Loughrea, County Galway, and involves travelling to multiple sites nationwide. Applicants should be comfortable working mainly on client premises and handling a varied site workload.
