Role Summary

The Legal Counsel, Investigations will join the expanding legal team in Washington, DC, serving as a primary legal generalist focusing on internal investigations, compliance, ethics, and legal enforcement within a multinational defense organization. This position manages investigations spanning diverse legal areas such as white-collar crime, government contracting, anti-corruption, export controls, employment law, intellectual property, data protection, privacy, and cybersecurity.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead comprehensive internal investigations and ethics evaluations covering various corporate legal matters including financial misconduct, government procurement integrity, anti-corruption laws, trade controls, workplace conduct, IP issues, and data/security concerns.
• Oversee all stages of investigations — from initial intake and evidence preservation to interviewing, fact analysis, root cause evaluation, findings documentation, and implementing corrective measures.
• Evaluate legal risks and guide leadership on mitigation strategies and when disclosures to regulatory bodies are warranted.
• Develop, implement, and refine compliance programs, policies, and internal controls in collaboration with business and legal teams.
• Create and maintain policies, procedures, and compliance playbooks consistent with regulatory and contractual obligations.
• Coordinate cross-departmental teams including HR, finance, security, outside counsel to manage investigations and audits efficiently and with minimal business disruption.
• Engage and maintain productive relationships with government enforcement agencies, auditors (e.g., DCMA/DCAA), inspectors general, and congressional committees.
• Support regulatory audits, assessments, and prepare the company for government inquiries or enforcement proceedings.
• Advise on data governance, cybersecurity, and privacy matters related to investigations and legal compliance.
• Take full ownership of impactful projects influencing company policies and compliance posture.

Required Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited institution and licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (preferably DC or California).
• Minimum six years’ experience focused on internal investigations, government audits, regulatory enforcement, or white-collar criminal matters in law firms, government, or corporate environments, especially technology or defense sectors.
• Proven ability to manage complex, sensitive investigations, including evidence management and privilege issues.
• Detailed understanding of regulatory frameworks relevant to U.S. government contractors such as FAR/DFARS, FCPA, export controls, procurement laws, employment regulations, and cybersecurity standards.
• Proactive judgment and ability to independently handle multiple complex legal issues in fast-paced environments.
• Adaptability to quickly learn and contribute across broader legal topics including litigation, compliance, intellectual property, and securities.
• Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense Secret security clearance.
• Good standing membership of any U.S. state bar.
• Willingness to travel up to 30%.
• Must be a U.S. Person capable of accessing export-controlled data and facilities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Diverse experience spanning law firms, government, and in-house positions, preferably as a leader in investigations or compliance within a defense contractor.
• Strong background in government audits, investigations, and regulatory inquiries.
• Familiarity engaging enforcement agencies such as DOJ, SEC, DoD, and state attorneys general.
• Expertise in multiple compliance domains including anti-corruption, export control, ethics, employment law, and data protection.
• Certifications such as Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP), or Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP), or a commitment to obtain them.
• Technical knowledge or experience collaborating with engineering teams.
• Genuine interest in defense technology and autonomous systems.

Salary & Benefits

The anticipated salary range for this position is $191,000 to $253,000 per year, which encompasses base pay and may vary based on experience, education, and skills. The total compensation package typically includes competitive equity awards. Comprehensive benefits are offered to full-time employees, supporting health and well-being at minimal to no cost.
