Role overview

Te Kaupeka Oranga, the Faculty of Health at the University of Canterbury in Ōtautahi Christchurch, is seeking a fixed-term Lecturer focused on teaching and administration in Sport. The appointment runs for 2 years and is based on a 37.5-hour work week.

What the role involves

This position combines undergraduate teaching, student support, and coordination of Work Integrated Learning (WIL). The appointee will help deliver high-quality teaching in Sport and Health and Physical Education, while also building and managing placement opportunities with schools, community groups, and other external partners.

The role requires close collaboration with students, academic staff, and industry contacts to make sure practicum and project experiences are well designed, clearly scoped, and aligned with programme expectations.

Key duties

• Teach and contribute to undergraduate Sport and Health and Physical Education courses, with emphasis on pedagogy, curriculum, professional practice, and learner development.
• Support students through mentoring, academic guidance, pastoral care, and wellbeing-focused engagement.
• Use current knowledge of sport and PE curriculum development, curriculum change, and educational practice to connect theory with real coaching, teaching, and learning settings.
• Work across programmes and disciplines to strengthen links between the sport and education sectors, including primary, secondary, and tertiary pathways.
• Create inclusive and culturally responsive learning environments that promote equity and support the success of diverse learners.
• Contribute to programme development, teaching quality, scholarship, service, and wider faculty goals through ongoing professional learning.
• Develop, coordinate, and maintain WIL opportunities by building partnerships with schools, community organisations, and other stakeholders.
• Liaise with students, teaching staff, and external partners to ensure placement and project experiences meet course and programme requirements.

Who should apply

The faculty is looking for an academic staff member with a completed degree in sport or a closely related discipline. Candidates with substantial industry experience will also be considered. The successful applicant should bring strong expertise in their sport area, proven experience leading or coordinating undergraduate sport courses, and a solid network within the relevant industry.

The Faculty of Health offers undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research across a wide range of health and sport areas, including Sport and Health, Counselling, Social Work, Child and Family Psychology, Nursing, Health Leadership, and several population health and clinical postgraduate pathways.
