Job Overview
The Lead Electrical Design Engineer will oversee and drive the electrical engineering aspects of multidisciplinary infrastructure projects from initial concept all the way to detailed design and construction support. This leadership role demands extensive technical expertise, project management skills, coordination with clients, and collaboration across various disciplines to deliver safe, reliable, and sustainable electrical designs compliant with Qatar regulations, international standards, and client specifications.
The portfolio includes designing electrical systems for roads, highways, utilities, water and wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, substations, district cooling plants, transportation projects, and public infrastructure ventures.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership in electrical engineering design from concept through detailed design and tender documentation phases.
- Create innovative, safe, and cost-efficient electrical solutions.
- Review and approve engineering calculations, design drawings, specifications, bills of quantities, and technical reports.
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant Qatari regulations, international codes, and client requirements.
- Coordinate interfaces with civil, structural, mechanical, ICT, utilities, and architectural teams.
- Perform technical design reviews and conduct value engineering exercises.
- Lead design efforts on medium and low voltage power distribution systems, substations, transformers, switchgear, ring main units, generators, UPS, and various lighting systems including street, highway, tunnel, area, and smart lighting.
- Oversee electrical room layouts, cable routing and underground networks, earthing, bonding, lightning protection, SCADA power systems, pumping station electrical systems, water and wastewater facilities, district cooling plants, renewable energy integrations such as solar PV, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
- Manage electrical engineering teams and project resources across multiple assignments, planning schedules and monitoring budgets and deliverables to ensure timely submissions.
- Lead and contribute to design coordination meetings, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies.
- Engage with clients and stakeholders through meetings and technical workshops, presenting solutions and coordinating with local authorities for required approvals.
- Support proposal development and respond to client and authority feedback.
- Ensure all engineering deliverables conform to company quality assurance and quality control practices, and to applicable standards including Qatar Construction Specifications, Kahramaa Electrical Regulations, Ashghal Design Manuals, Qatar Civil Defence codes, IEC, IEEE, NFPA, BS/EN, and ISO standards.
- Lead BIM coordination for the electrical discipline, including reviewing Revit models, performing clash detection and ensuring adherence to BIM Execution Plans.
- Mentor and develop electrical engineers, BIM specialists, and CAD designers, fostering continuous improvement, technical excellence, and best practices within the team.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering is mandatory; a Master’s Degree is preferred.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng), Professional Engineer (PE), or equivalent certification is advantageous.
- A minimum of 12 to 15 years’ experience in electrical design, including at least 5 years in a lead engineering role.
- Substantial background in infrastructure engineering consultancy with proven track record leading major infrastructure projects in Qatar or the Gulf Cooperation Council region.
- Experience handling multidisciplinary engineering teams effectively.
