Role Overview
The Laboratory Technician Apprentice position invites enthusiastic individuals to join the Materials Characterisation Unit, primarily working in specialist microscopy labs. This opportunity combines practical work experience within a world-class research facility with a Level 3 Apprenticeship qualification.

Key Responsibilities
- Prepare samples for laboratory testing and analysis
- Conduct tests following established procedures or client specifications
- Assist with routine maintenance and checks of lab equipment
- Document test outcomes and maintain accurate laboratory records
- Support the compilation of test reports
- Contribute to daily laboratory operations and teamwork
- Ensure the laboratory environment remains clean, organized, and safe
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate exhibits curiosity and a desire to understand laboratory processes beyond basic instructions. They approach tasks with meticulousness and consistency, embracing repetitive duties to guarantee precise and trustworthy results. Strong IT and literacy skills are essential for accurate data recording and clear report generation. Candidates should be proactive learners, receptive to feedback, and capable of working methodically within structured procedures.
Apprenticeship Details
This Level 3 Apprenticeship spans approximately 20 months, blending workplace learning with structured training via online modules, live instruction, and practical exercises. Trainees will engage in a minimum of 6 hours per week of off-the-job training supported by dedicated mentors from Tiro.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be aged 16 or older
- Not enrolled in full-time education
- Have resided in the UK for at least three years
- Have the legal right to work in the UK
- Must not currently hold or have previously obtained a Level 3 qualification or higher in a directly related field
Career Development
Completing this apprenticeship offers a strong foundation for a laboratory technician career and opens pathways to professional recognition such as Registered Science Technician status (RSciTech). Further advancement to higher education degrees in Biology, Materials Science, or Chemistry may also be pursued.
