Job description
Role overview
This position is based in BRC, an AAALAC International accredited and bizSAFE Level 3 certified laboratory animal facility located in Biopolis and established in 2005. Operating as a shared service unit under the Biomedical Sciences Institutes, BRC supports research animal services that enable biological and biomedical research and contribute to Singapore’s biotechnology and human healthcare goals.
What you will do
- Report to the supervisor and provide husbandry and day-to-day care for animals and their living environment according to the facility’s standards and operating routines.
- Apply training in best-practice animal husbandry and put those methods into use.
- Keep the facility clean and ensure sanitation standards are consistently met.
- Follow safety procedures at all times, including wearing scrubs and personal protective equipment such as masks.
- Carry out daily animal health observations and escalate unusual findings to veterinarians, facility managers, and/or researchers.
- Work alongside veterinarians to monitor colony health.
- Handle administrative records such as census tracking, animal identification, and logs.
- Build working knowledge of regulatory compliance and animal care/use standards, including the NACLAR Guidelines and AAALAC International requirements.
Requirements
- A diploma in a science-related field is preferred, such as General Biology, Veterinary Science, or Laboratory Animal Science.
- AALAS certification and knowledge of the NACLAR Guidelines will be an advantage.
- At least 1 year of experience with laboratory animals is preferred.
- Applicants without prior experience may still be considered, as training will be provided.
- Strong teamwork skills, with the ability to work on your own when needed.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Good people skills and the ability to work effectively with different personalities.
- Comfortable using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Able to lift a 10 kg bag of diet and move trolleys up to 2 m in height.
- Physically able to stand for most of the day and occasionally squat or use a step stool to inspect animals.
- Capable of performing basic animal procedures such as handling, injections, and other routine experimental techniques as assigned.
- Available to work at least one Saturday and one Sunday each month.
- Must be able to use a powered air purifying respirator (PAPR).
- Shows initiative, a strong work ethic, and integrity.
- Willing to take on other duties assigned by the supervisor or manager.
Additional information
This is a hands-on laboratory animal operations role that combines animal care, sanitation, compliance awareness, record keeping, and collaboration with veterinary staff. The role includes physical work and regular weekend coverage.
