Laboratory Assistant - Fire Assay Department

We are seeking candidates for our well-equipped Fire Assay Department located at our advanced Geochemistry Laboratory in Loughrea, County Galway, servicing regions including Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. This opportunity is specifically for the Weekend Shift.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare assay mixtures by combining finely ground samples with assay flux in clay crucibles.
• Perform fusion of mixtures in a furnace at ~1100°C and cast the molten material into iron molds.
• Extract the solidified melt and retrieve lead buttons, ensuring they are free of impurities.
• Conduct cupellation of lead buttons in a furnace at approximately 950°C to isolate precious metals.
• Send obtained prills for weighing or digestion prior to instrumental analysis.
• Weigh samples carefully in accordance with SOP, maintaining sample identification and order throughout processing.
• Handle samples diligently to avoid loss, contamination, or confusion.
• Fill out required forms and worksheets, signing or initialing records as necessary.
• Ensure all equipment is operated following safety protocols and manufacturer instructions, maintaining a clean and orderly work environment.
• Perform digestion of prills with various acids post-fire assay process before laboratory analysis.
• Understand all procedures involved in fire assay methods including weighing and sample digestion.
• Maintain equipment calibration and uphold sample order through all manual processes.
• Exercise caution when handling prills to prevent loss during dissolution, decanting, or washing steps.
• Report any issues encountered promptly to supervisory staff.

Candidate Requirements

• No prior laboratory experience required; full training and guidance will be provided.
• Strong numerical aptitude, communication skills, organizational abilities, and time management.
• Physically fit and adaptable to shift work as needed.
• Detail-oriented, motivated, capable of both independent and team collaboration.
• High commitment to personal and workplace safety.
• Ability to work efficiently under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
• Comfortable working in a hot and physically demanding environment.
• Flexibility and reliability to fulfill the dynamic demands of the department.

Employment Details and Benefits
