Junior Sister/Charge Nurse - Medical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)

About the Role

The Medical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) at Wexham Park Hospital is a fast-paced, innovative unit offering urgent, patient-focused care designed to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions. This Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse position is a fixed-term or secondment role covering maternity leave for 12 months. The successful candidate will join a compassionate and dedicated multidisciplinary team, contributing to transforming urgent medical care services.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess, investigate, and treat patients within the Medical SDEC service promptly.
• Offer guidance and support to team members to ensure thorough clinical assessment, planning, and care delivery.
• Perform specialized clinical procedures within competency such as drug administration (oral and intravenous), venepuncture, cannulation, wound dressings, catheter insertions, ECG, and vital sign monitoring using NEWS/MEOWS.
• Lead nursing team performance and care standards alongside Unit Managers, fostering service and staff development.
• Act as deputy to Ward Matrons when absent, handling meetings and organizing workforce structure.
• Manage and triage referrals and calls received from GPs, Primary Care, and Emergency Department while consulting with lead Consultants.
• Maintain smooth patient flow within the department.
• Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and facilitate appropriate referrals across specialties.
• Support Ward Managers, junior staff, and students to maintain high-quality care standards.
• Facilitate clinic activities such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) assessments, Pleural procedures, Lumbar Punctures, and Ascitic drain management.

Qualifications and Experience

• Registered with the NMC (first or second level).
• Completed nursing degree or currently working towards it.
• Portfolio evidencing ongoing personal, professional, and academic growth at advanced nursing practice level.
• Significant experience in Emergency Care settings such as Emergency Departments, Acute Medicine, or Surgical Assessment units.
• Updated knowledge of clinical practice standards and demonstrated multidisciplinary team collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications and Attributes

• Leadership course completion.
• Advanced Life Support (ALS) provider certification.
• Experience with Ambulatory Emergency Care preferred.
• Involvement in research and clinical audit activities.
• Strong clinical practice skills related to the role.
• Demonstrated leadership and effective change management capabilities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with IT and data presentation.
