Job description

Position Overview

The Janitor plays a crucial role within the Operations department, tasked with maintaining cleanliness and hygiene at Koidu Government Hospital (KGH) and the Maternal Center of Excellence (MCOE) located in Koidu Town, Kono District, Sierra Leone. Reporting to the Head Janitor, this role involves conducting daily cleaning operations following health standards to sustain a sanitary and welcoming environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute hygiene and disinfection duties adhering strictly to prescribed protocols, including cleaning floors, furniture, walls, doors, and some medical equipment in various hospital settings such as patient rooms, consultation areas, laboratories, operating theatres, delivery and mortuary rooms, waiting areas, staff rooms, storage spaces, kitchens, bathrooms, and latrines.
  • Manage waste collection and disposal safely by segregating medical waste and emptying trash receptacles regularly to maintain hospital cleanliness and safety.
  • Promote hygiene and sanitation awareness among patients, visitors, mothers, and staff by encouraging proper usage of water points, latrines, hand-washing stations, and washing areas in partnership with nursing and health promotion teams.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and maintenance of cleaning equipment and supplies, monitor inventory levels, and prepare procurement requests for replenishment.
  • Report maintenance or repair needs related to hygiene infrastructure and share relevant operational information with supervisors.
  • Perform additional departmental duties as assigned and collaborate effectively with team members to meet collective objectives while fostering a positive work environment.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Self-driven and proactive, committed to teamwork and the principles of humanitarian support.
  • Flexible, eager to learn, and disciplined with a serious attitude toward janitorial duties.
  • Capable of enduring demanding work conditions including extended hours and stressful environments.
  • Experience in providing environmental services within healthcare facilities is advantageous.
  • Minimum of six months’ practical experience as a janitor or similar role in a healthcare context.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal capabilities.
  • Willing and able to work onsite in rural healthcare environments in Sierra Leone.
  • Fluency in Krio is mandatory; English proficiency is beneficial.
  • Interest in social justice, healthcare, and support for underprivileged communities.
  • Literacy and having completed WASSCE are preferred but not mandatory.
