Job description
Role overview
MBIE is seeking an experienced senior leader to join its Investment Management Branch in Wellington. This permanent full-time position offers the chance to help shape major regional economic development investments that influence growth, resilience, and public value across New Zealand.
In this role, you will operate at the point where government, business, and communities meet. You will guide complex commercial decisions and provide leadership across the full investment lifecycle for a portfolio of important Crown investments.
Key accountabilities
- Oversee the stewardship and management of a portfolio of significant Crown investments.
- Evaluate, design, and negotiate complex investment proposals and funding structures.
- Track delivery and financial performance while managing commercial, operational, and reputational risk.
- Prepare strategic advice and recommendations for Ministers and other senior decision makers.
- Develop and maintain trusted partnerships with iwi and Māori organisations, local government, industry, and investment counterparts.
- Lead, coach, and grow a high-performing team while contributing to leadership across the branch and strengthening investment practice.
Experience and capabilities
MBIE is looking for senior commercial professionals with experience in investment, banking, corporate finance, infrastructure, project finance, private equity, venture capital, advisory work, or similar fields.
The successful candidate will ideally bring strong commercial judgement, a proven ability to assess complex opportunities and risks, and confidence operating in ambiguous and politically sensitive environments. You will also need to influence decisions, communicate clearly using evidence, negotiate effectively, and build durable relationships across a wide range of stakeholders.
Leadership experience is essential, including the ability to develop people and contribute to strong team performance. Familiarity with public sector processes or the machinery of government would be helpful, though it is not mandatory.
Organisation overview
MBIE works to support a resilient, high-performing economy that improves quality of life for New Zealanders. Its work focuses on helping businesses become more productive and competitive, supporting participation in the economy through better job opportunities, and contributing to more affordable housing.
The organisation’s values are Mahi Tahi (Better Together), Māia (Bold and brave), Pae Kahurangi (Build our Future), and Pono Me Te Tika (Own It). MBIE also operates with a strong commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to building effective, enduring partnerships with iwi, Māori organisations, and the Crown.
