Job description

Position Overview

We are looking for a seasoned Interior Designer III with significant expertise in commercial interiors and government projects to join our Client Services – Design department at Capitol Heights, MD. This position involves leading comprehensive design initiatives, crafting strategic design plans, and acting as a key technical and process resource for project teams. The successful candidate will handle detailed project documentation, ensure precise specifications, support contract compliance, resolve complex site and product issues, mentor junior designers, and participate in process improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead creation and refinement of detailed CET drawings, furniture layouts, product specs, 3D visualizations, and presentation documents.
  • Manage preparation of installation drawings and related documents for complex projects, ensuring accuracy, constructability, and alignment with goals.
  • Provide consistent project status updates to design leaders, sales teams, and other stakeholders to help steer project priorities.
  • Work closely with account executives, clients, manufacturers, and internal groups to develop concepts and tackle design challenges.
  • Oversee finish selections, product recommendations, value engineering, and specification choices for large or high-profile assignments.
  • Maintain rigorous project documentation standards, ensuring all decisions, deliverables, and risks are thoroughly recorded.
  • Identify and address inconsistencies between drawings, specs, field conditions, and installation needs, proposing solutions.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, innovative products, sustainability efforts, and best practices, sharing insights across teams.
  • Mentor junior designers through technical advice, drawing reviews, product knowledge, and process guidance.
  • Contribute to design standards, quality assurance, workflow improvements, and promote cross-team collaboration.
  • Represent the team professionally during client meetings, presentations, and project coordination discussions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a FIDER or CIDA-accredited Interior Design program or equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years of advancing experience in commercial interior design, workplace environments, furniture dealerships, or government-related projects.
  • Expertise in AutoCAD including complex drawing creation, revision, and specification preparation.
  • Familiarity with CET software is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Strong knowledge of government project requirements, contract specifications, and project procedures highly advantageous.
  • Deep understanding of installation drawings, specification packages, field coordination, and documentation control.
  • Advanced knowledge of systems furniture, accessory products, finish selections, and manufacturer resources.
  • Proven ability to balance design excellence with budget, schedule, constructability, and client needs.
  • Excellent organization, communication, problem-solving, and project management capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently, provide senior technical guidance, and mentor team members.
